BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team lost an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Saturday, May 5, 2012) on Seniors' Day at Heritage Field. The Cardinals scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to win the first game, 4-1, and captured the nightcap, 4-2.
With its losses, the Yellow Jackets are 27-13 overall and 9-9 in the OAC and must now hope for an NCAA Division III National Tournament At-Large berth. The 27 wins is a single-season school-record. Otterbein ends its season at 22-17 overall and 8-10 in the OAC.
In the first game, the game was scoreless for the first five and one-half innings before the Yellow Jackets scored once in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, junior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls) singled, moved to second base on a passed ball and scored on a double by junior first baseman Jay Yost (Bascom/ Hopewell-Loudon). But, in the top of the seventh, the Cardinals scored four times with the big blow bring a grand slam homerun by the OAC's leading longball hitter, catcher Wes Meadows.
At the plate, B-W outhit the Cardinals, 7-4. Longhitano and Yost led the way with a pair of hits each. On the mound, junior righthander Pat Havens (Twinsburg), who missed his last two starts due to an injury, pitched a solid first six innings before giving way to junior Jon Tenley (Wadsworth) and then sophomore Cory Waite (Willoughby/ South). Havens allowed three hits, no runs, struck out three and walked one Otterbein batter. Tenley was charged with the loss to fall to 0-3 this season.
In the second game, the Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in each of the first and second innings. B-W stung for a run in the bottom of the sixth as senior catcher Ryan Nordquist (Alliance/ Senior) singled but was erased via a fielder's choice and replaced on the basepaths by junior leftfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate). He advanced to second base when Longhitano singled and went to third base when Longhitano was erased at second base via a fielder's choice. Toughey then scored on a wild pitch.
At the plate, the Yellow Jackets again outhit the Cardinals, 10-6. Individually, sophomore 2B Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) had three hits and both Longhitano and freshman designated hitter Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) each had a pair of base hits. On the mound, senior Josh Scott (Strongsville) started and pitched the first one and two-third innings. He was followed by sophomore Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) in the second and sophomore Jon Capadona (North Royalton) for the final seven frames. Scott, who took the loss to fall to 8-2 overall, allowed four hits, four runs (all earned), struck out one and walked three. Fodor retired the only man he faced. Capadona pitched seven excellent innings, allowed two hits, no runs, struck out seven and did not walk a Cardinal.
In the ninth, B-W cut the deficit to 4-2 as freshman rightfielder Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North) was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a single by freshman third baseman Eric Murphy (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark), advanced to third base when Murphy was erased at second base on a fielder's choice and scored on a Gugliotta single. Ferster, who reached base via the fielder's choice, moved to second on Gugliotta's single and to third on another fielder's choice. Then Nordquist walked to load the bases, but that was as close as B-W would get to the Cardinals.
