Baseball Team Extends Win Mark to 27 With 13-3 Triumph at Hiram

HIRAM, OHIO --  The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team defeated traditional rival Hiram College, 13-3, today (Wednesday, April 25, 2012) at Robert O. Fishel Field.  The victory extended B-W's school single-season record win total to 27.

With the victory, the Yellow Jackets improved to a school-record 27-9 overall, including three straight wins. The Terriers fell to 8-24 overall, including 20 straight losses.


B-W jumped out to an early, 7-0 lead as it scored seven runs in the top of the first inning. the Terriers came back with a pair of their own in the bottom of the first to cut the deficit to 7-2. The Yellow Jackets made it a 9-2 game with two runs in the second and Hiram got as close as 9-3 when it scored in the bottom of the fourth frame. B-W added its final four runs with one each in the fifth and sixth innings and a pair in the ninth.


The Yellow Jackets outhit the Terriers, 14-9.  The hitting attack was led by freshman rightfielder Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North) with three hits, including a pair of doubles, two runs scored and three runs batted-in. In addition, freshman third baseman Eric Murphy (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) had two hits, scored a run and had two RBI, and freshman designated hitter Alex Green (Pickerington/ North) and sophomore middle infielder Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) each had a pair of RBI.


On the mound, senior Brent Edmonds (Olmsted Falls) started and pitched the first three innings, allowed a pair of runs and gained the victory to improve to 2-2 this season. He was followed to the mound by Chuck Jones (Kettering/ Fairmont) in the fourth, and he gave up the final Terrier run. Senior Josh Stobinski (Ottawa Hills) pitched the fifth, sophomore Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) the sixth, freshman Luke Ackerman (Sheffield Village/ Brookside) the seventh, junior Will Pantages (Akron/ Firestone) the eighth and sophomore Cory Waite (Willoughby/ South) the ninth and all five tossed a scoreless frame.


The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, April 28 for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with defending NCAA Division III  National Champion and top-ranked Marietta College at 1:00 p.m. B-W ends the regular season on Saturday, May 5 by hosting Otterbein University in an OAC twinbill at 1:00 p.m..
