Baseball Team Defeats Moravian, 12-4 on Fifth Day of Spring Trip

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLORIDA – The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team defeated Moravian (Pa.) College, 12-4, today (Wednesday, March 7, 2012) today on the fifth day of its annual Spring Break Trip at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Florida. The Yellow Jackets have won six of their last seven games.

With its win, B-W improved to 6-2 overall. With its loss, Moravian fell to 5-3 overall.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-1 advantage following the first four innings of play. B-W then scored 10 runs in the fifth, to take the lead, 11-4. The Yellow Jackets then added a run in the sixth which was the final run of the game.

For the game, B-W outhit Moravian, 15-7.

At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by freshman first basemen Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North) as he went
five-for five with three singles, two doubles and one triple. Chontos also scored three runs while driving in two.

In addition to Chontos, sophomore
Kory Gillissie (Parma/St. Ignatius) and freshman Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) and Ethan Briggs (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) each recorded two hits in the game as well.

On the mound, senior Brent Edmonds (Olmsted Falls) towed the rubber for the Yellow Jackets and went four and one-third innings, allowing four runs (earned) on six hits while walking three and striking out two. Freshman Anthony Alioto (Mayfield Heights/Mayfield) threw the final four and two-third innings, not allowing a run and only surrendering one hit; en route to earning his first career victory.

B-W returns to action tomorrow, March 8, 2012, when it plays Bluffton University in a single, nine-inning game at 10 a.m. The Yellow Jackets are playing eight varsity and four junior varsity games in seven days in the Sunshine State. B-W's first home game is on Wednesday, April 4, against nonleague and cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University at Heritage Field in Berea at 4 p.m.
