Baseball Team Ties School-Record for Wins with Split Against Ohio Northern

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Saturday, April 21, 2012) against Ohio Northern University to tie the school-record for wins in a season at 25. The Polar Bears won the first game, 11-6, and Yellow Jackets captured the nightcap, 5-2.

With its win, the Yellow Jackets are 25-9 overall and 9-5 in the OAC. The 25 wins is the most in a season since the 2003-2004 season when the team went 20-14 overall. B-W has tied its all-time school-record for victories with 25. The original mark was set in both 1990-91 (25-19-2) and 2001-2002 (25-12-1).  ONU is now 12-19 overall and 5-8 in the OAC.


In the first game, the Polar Bears scored three times in the top of the first inning and led 3-1 after a B-W tally in the bottom half of the second frame. ONU increased its lead to 6-1 with three more in the third and B-W made it 6-2 with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning.  The Bears then grabbed a 10-2 lead with four runs in the fourth. B-W closed the gap to 10-3 with a run in the sixth, but ONU regained its eight-run bulge with one in the seventh. The Jackets would not go down without a fight as they scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to end the scoring.


At the plate, the junior second baseman
Jay Yost (Bascom/ Hopewell-Loudon) led the way with three base hits and freshman third baseman Eric Murphy (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) had a pair. On the mound, junior right-hander David Redovian (Fairlawn/ Copley) started and took the loss to fall to 5-3 this season.

In the nightcap, B-W gained a 1-0 lead in the first as junior leadoff hitter Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate) singled, moved to third via a failed ONU pickoff attempt and scored on a wild pitch. The lead grew to 2-0 in the second when senior catcher Ryan Nordquist (Alliance/ Senior) walked, moved to second when sophomore designated hitter Joe Hiller (Twinsburg) singled, moved to third via a sacrifice bunt and scored on another Toughey single.

The Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 4-0 in the third when freshman right fielder Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) reached first base on a strikeout and a wild pitch, moved to second on another wild pitch, to third on a Nordquist single and scored on a single by Hiller. Nordquist scored the second run when freshman center fielder Ethan Briggs (Sarasota, Fla./ Riverview) grounded out to second.


At the plate, B-W was led by senior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls) as he recorded three base hits and Hiller recorded two hits, one walk and one run batted in.


On the mound, sophomore right-hander Jon Capadona (North Royalton) started and went six and two-third strong innings, allowed six hits, one run (earned), struck out four and walked two. He was relieved by senior Bill Bostelman (Marion/ Harding), who allowed a base hit and then was replaced by junior "stopper" Jon Tenley (Wadsworth). Tenley pitched the final two and one-third innings to earn the save and set the B-W single-season save record as he recorded his seventh this season and increase his school career-record to 11. Tenley, who made his team-high-tying 15th appearance in 2012,allowed two hits, one run (earned), struck out one and walked two.


The Yellow Jackets will seek a school-record 26th victory this Tuesday, April 24 when they host Lourdes University in a single, nine-inning non-conference game at 4:00 p.m at Heritage Field. B-W also plays at traditional rival Hiram College on Wednesday, April 25 at 4:00 p.m. and ends the week by hosting No.1-ranked Marietta College in an OAC doubleheader at Heritage Field at 1:00 p.m.

The Yellow Jacket Leaders/ Notebook

To date, the Yellow Jackets are led in hitting by Brendan Toughey at .392 (51-for-130) with a team-high 47 runs scored and 18 stolen bases in 18 attempts. He also is first with 18 walks drawn, second with 10 doubles, a .471 on-base average and .974 fielding average and third with a .485 slugging average.

On the mound, junior right-handed staff ace Pat Havens (Twinsburg) has a 7-1 record with a 2.54 earned run average and 60 strikeouts in 46 innings pitched. Sophomore reliever Cory Waite (Willoughby/ South) is tied with Jon Tenley for the most relief appearances with 15 and tops the team with a 1.83 ERA with 15 whiffs in 19 and two-third innings pitched.
