Baseball Team Splits Twinbill With Mount Union

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against rival the University of Mount Union today (Friday, April 6, 2012) at Heritage Field.  The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 4-0, and the Purple Raiders won the nightcap, 7-3.

With its split, B-W improved its record to 18-6 overall and 3-3 in the OAC and has split its first three conference doubleheaders. Mount Union is 17-8 overall and 3-3 in the OAC and also has split its first three league twinbills.

In the first game, B-W senior righthander Pat Havens (Twinsburg) improved his record to 6-1 overall as he tossed a three-hit gem against the Purple Raiders. Havens struck out five, allowed two walks and did not allow a Mt. Union baserunner to reach third base.

B-W gained a 3-0 lead in the first inning by virtue of five base hits. After a line out to open the game, senior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls) singled and moved to third when freshman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North) doubled to the right center gap. Junior second baseman Jay Yost (Bascom/ Hopewell-Loudon) singled to score Longhitano and moved Chontos to third base, and when the Purple Raider leftfielder misplayed the ball, he advanced to second with some heads-up baserunning. Following a flyout, freshman Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) singled to right center and that scored Chontos and Yost.

The Yellow Jackets scored their final run in the sixth as Yost singled to left field, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored via a double by senior catcher Ryan Nordquist (Alliance/ Senior).

At the plate, Yost led the way with a pair of base hits, two runs scored and a run batted-in.

In the second game, Mt. Union gained a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first, but B-W grabbed a 2-1 advantage with a pair of runs in the fourth. The Purple Raiders responded with a five-run outburst in the sixth and added another in the seventh for a 7-2 lead. B-W scored its final run in the eighth when junior LF Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate) doubled and scored via a pair of groundouts.

At the plate, B-W had just four hits.  On the mound, junior righthander David Redovian (Fairlawn/ Copley) started and took the loss to fall to 4-2 this season. He was followed to the mound by sophomore Cory Waite (Willoughby/ South), senior Bill Bostelman (Marion/ Harding) and junior Jon Tenley (Wadsworth). The quartet allowed just seven hits, struck out nine and walked five.

B-W is back in action on Tuesday, April 10 when they travel to Oberlin, Ohio to play traditional non-league rival Oberlin College in a single, nine-inning game at 4:00 p.m. The Yellow Jackets then host an OAC twinbill against Capital University on Wednesday, April 11 at 1:00 p.m. at Heritage Field.
