Baseball Team Sweeps John Jay (N.Y.) on First Day of Spring Trip

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLORIDA – The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team swept John Jay (N.Y.) College in a nonleague doubleheader today (Saturday, March 3, 2012) on the first day of its Annual Spring Break Trip at the Snowbird Baseball Classic. The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 23-3, and won the nightcap in a shortened five inning shutout, 8-0.

With its wins, B-W is now 4-1 overall. With its losses, John Jay is now 1-7 overall.


In the first game, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a four-run advantage in the bottom of the first inning. The Bloodhounds got on the board with one in the second. B-W then scored four in the third and fourth and seven in the fifth innings to extend the lead to 19-1. John Jay then scored two in the sixth and B-W added on four more in the bottom of the sixth to close out the scoring.


At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore second baseman and shortstop Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg), sophomore first baseman Drew Mahler (Wooster) and freshman outfielder Ethan Briggs (Sarasota Fla./ Riverview). Gugliotta was two-for-two with two doubles, three runs batted in and a walk. Mahler went 3-for-5 with one double, two singles and three RBI. Briggs was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with three singles and two RBI.


On the mound, senior Josh Scott (Strongsville) earned the win and pitched the first five innings. He allowed one run (earned) and struck out three batters. He was followed by senior Brent Edmonds (Olmsted Falls) who pitched one inning, surrendered two runs (earned) and had two strikeouts. Junior Will Pantages (Akron/ Firestone) came in and pitched the seventh inning and gave up zero runs and recorded one strikeout.


In the second game, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. B-W then tacked on one run in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth innings to extend their lead to 8-0 for the final tally.


At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by junior outfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute), Mahler and senior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls). Toughey went 2-for-2 with one triple, one double and a walk. Mahler was 2-for-3 with one triple, a single and two RBI. Longhitano recorded one double and had a walk.   


On the mound, junior Pat Havens (Twinsburg) started and pitched four scoreless innings of baseball. He struck out eight batters and allowed two walks. Sophomore Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) came in for one inning of relief work and recorded two strikeouts.


B-W returns to action tomorrow when it plays Bluffton College in a single, nine-inning game at 6:00 p.m. The Yellow Jackets are playing eight varsity and four junior varsity games in seven days in the Sunshine State. B-W's first home game is on April 4 against nonleague and cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University at Heritage Field in Berea at 4:00 p.m.
