Baseball Team Defeats Medaille, 13-0, in Shortened Game

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLORIDA – The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team defeated Medaille (N.Y.) College, 13-0, today (Friday, March 9, 2012) on the seventh day of its Annual Spring Break Trip at the Snowbird Baseball Classic. The Yellow Jackets have won eight of their last nine games.

With its win, B-W is now 8-2 overall. With its loss, Medaille is now 0-8 overall.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 12-0 lead by the sixth inning, scoring four runs in the third, fourth and sixth. B-W then tacked on another run in the seventh before the game ended in the eighth due to lack of daylight.

B-W outhit the Mavericks, 15-1.

At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by senior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls), junior first baseman Matt Kulick (Wilmot/Fairless) and freshman outfielder Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North) as they each recorded two hits. Longhitano had two singles, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Kulick had two singles, two RBI and a run scored. Chontos had two singles, two runs scored, one RBI and a stolen base.

In addition, senior Ryan Nordquist (Alliance) and freshman Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) each had a two-run home run in the game. Nordquist's hit was an inside-the-park shot to deep center field. Ferster's blast scored Kulick ahead of him as his hit went over the right field fence.

On the mound, junior Pat Havens (Twinsburg) started and pitched six innings, improving his record to 3-0. He surrendered only one hit, zero runs and recorded 11 strikeouts. He was followed by sophomore Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg), who pitched the final two innings, recording six outs in a row with two strikeouts.

B-W returns to action on Saturday, March 10, 2012, when the Yellow Jackets play
Montclair State (N.J.) University in a single, nine-inning game at 11:30 a.m. This is the Yellow Jackets' final game in the Sunshine State. B-W's first home game is on April 4 against nonleague and cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University at Heritage Field in Berea at 4:00 p.m.
