BEREA, OHIO -- Six Baldwin-Wallace College baseball players have been named to the 2012 All-Ohio Athletic Conference team. The six are first-team selections in junior righthander pitcher Pat Havens (Twinsburg) and freshman designated hitter Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) and second-team choices in junior leftfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate), freshman first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North), junior second baseman Jay Yost (Bascom/ Hopewell-Loudon) and senior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls). The six helped the Yellow Jackets set a school record with 27 victories and compile a 27-13 overall record.
Havens was the ace of the staff and compiled a 7-1 record with a 2.25 earned run average and struck out 63 batters in 52 innings pitched. He started nine games, completed three, had one individual shutout and combined for two others. Opponents batted just .226 against him this season. For his career, Havens has a 12-6 record. In 27 appearances, including 19 starts, he has five complete games, two individual and five total shutouts and has struck out 102 batters in 117 and two-third innings pitched.
Ferster had a strong first season of collegiate baseball. He played in 40 games and started 36 and batted .344 (42-for-122) with 24 runs scored, four doubles, four triples, two homeruns, 30 runs batted-in and nine stolen bases in 12 attempts. He also had a .492 slugging and .436 on-base average.
Toughey played in and started all 40 games, was second on the team with a .377 batting average (57-for-151) and doubles (10), set a school single-season record with runs scored (53), led the team in base hits (57), walks drawn (21), stolen bases (23-for-23) and on-base average (.458). For his career, Toughey is hitting .326 (95-for-291) with 87 runs scored, 18 doubles, two triples, a homerun, 37 RBI and is a perfect 34-for-34 in stolen base attempts.
Chontos also had a strong first season as a Yellow Jacket as he played in and started all 40 contests. He batted .353 (54-for-153) with team-leading totals of 14 doubles, four homers, 37 RBI and a .526 slugging average. He also scored 42 runs and had one triple and stole six bases in seven attempts. Chontos also had a .425 on-base average.
Yost played in and started 38 games this season. He led the team in bating average at .381 (53-for-139) and had 38 runs scored, 11 doubles, one homer, 26 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 12 attempts. Yost also had a .482 slugging and .449 on-base average and led the team being hit-by-pitch 12 times. For his career, he is batting .320 (77-for-241) with 55 runs scored, 17 doubles, two homers, 38 RBI and 21 stolen bases.
Longhitano played in all 40 games, started 39 and had his third straight solid season as a starter. He was third in batting average at .361 (56-for-155), scored 33 runs, had six doubles, one homer and 27 RBI and was second with 13 stolen bases in 17 attempts. He also had a .419 slugging and .409 on-base average, a strong .948 fielding average and only struck out eight times in 172 plate appearances (once every 21.5 at-bats). For his career, Longhitano played in 122 games, including 111 starts, had a .307 batting average (118-for-384) with 83 runs scored, 12 doubles, one triple, one homer, 55 RBI and 19 steals.
