Baseball Team Ties School Record With 10 Game Winning Streak

WOOSTER, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team defeated The College of Wooster, 15-12, today (Wednesday, March 28, 2012) in a single nine inning game at Art Murray Field. The Yellow Jackets tied the school record for consecutive wins with 10.

Another milestone was set in the game, when junior closer Jon Tenley (Wadsworth) tied the all-time lead with seven career saves.

With its victory, B-W improves to 15-2 overall and opens Ohio Athletic Conference play this Saturday (March 31) at Muskingum University with a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.  Wooster is now 9-5 overall.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after two innings. The Fighting Scots would answer with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the second inning. The scoring would continue in the top of the third inning with three straight singles by juniors Jay Yost (Bascom/Hopewell-Loudon), Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria) and freshman Zach Ferster (Olmstead Falls). Ferster would pick up one run-batted-in on his single.

Freshman third baseman Eric Murphy (Brook Park/Midpark) would add four more runs to extend the B-W lead  to 10-2 on a grand slam to right centerfield. Freshman first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North) would follow Murphy with a solo homerun of his own to extend the Yellow Jacket lead 13-2. Wooster would score two runs in the bottom the third inning and four more in the bottom of the fourth to cut the B-W lead down to 13-8.  

The Yellow Jacket offense would go on the attack to add two mores runs in the top of the fifth inning. The score would remain at 15-8 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Fighting Scots would score two runs of their own in the seventh inning and two more in the bottom half of the eighth but would no closer as the final would stand at 15-12.

At the plate, B-W was led by Murphy, Ferster, and junior outfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate Inst.). Murphy went 2-for-6 at the plate with seven RBI, a grand slam and one run scored. Ferster went 4-for-5 with three RBI, one run scored and one stolen base. Toughey would go 3-for-4 with three runs scored, one run-batted-in and one double.

On the mound, senior right-hander Josh Scott (Strongsville) would start and go the first four innings giving up eight runs (all earned) on nine hits while striking out five batters. Sophomore Jon Capadona (North Royalton) would relieve Scott in the fifth inning and pitch three and two thirds innings. Capadona would give up four runs (two earned) on six hits with two strikeouts to earn his second win of the season. Tenley would pitch the final one and one third innings and go perfect with no runs, no hits, no walks with one strikeout.

Following its games at Muskingum on Saturday, B-W travels to cross-town and OAC rival John Carroll on Tuesday, April 3rd at 1:00 p.m. on Schweickert Field. The Yellow Jackets will have their home opener on Wednesday, April 4th as they host Case Western Reserve University at 4:00 p.m. on Heritage Field.
