Baseball Team Fall To Cross-Town Rival Case Western Reserve
CLEVELAND, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team fell to cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University today (Wednesday, April 18, 2012) in a single nine-inning game by a final score of 6-5 at Nobby's Ballpark. 

With the loss, the Yellow Jackets are 24-8 overall and remains one win tying the  all-time school-record of 25 that was set in both 1990-91 and 2001-2002.  Case improved to 22-12-1 overall and took the season series 2-0 with B-W.

The Spartans would send 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-0 lead on two hits.
 
B-W would cut into the lead, 5-1, as it would plate one run on three hits in the top of the third innings. Freshman centerfielder Ethan Briggs (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) led off the inning with a single to left field. Sophomore third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) reached on an infield single and Briggs advanced to second. Briggs scored on the RBI single to right field by junior second baseman Jay Yost (Bascom/Hopewell-Loudon).
 
Case would push its lead back to five runs, 6-1, in the bottom of the fifth inning as it would score one run on two hits.
 
The Yellow Jackets cut the lead back down to three runs, 6-3, as they scored two runs on two hits in the top seventh inning. Junior leftfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) reached on a two-out error by the first baseman. Gugliotta would then single through the left side and Toughey advanced to second. Chontos walked to load the bases.   Yost delivered a two RBI single up the middle and Toughey and Gugliotta scored.  
 
B-W  inched closer, 6-5, in the top of the eighth inning as it plated two runs on two hits. Sophomore designated hitter Drew Mahler (Wooster) reached first on a one-out walk. Senior Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls) pinch ran for MahlerBriggs would double down the right field line and Longhitano advanced to third. Toughey reached first on a fielding error by the second baseman. Longhitano scored and Briggs reached third on the RBI by Toughey.  Briggs scored on the RBI single by Gugliotta.

The Yellow Jacket offense scored five runs on 14 hits and was led by Gugliotta whowent 4-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Yost went 3-for-5 with a three RBI and Briggs was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.   Freshman right fielder Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) also went 2-for-4 with a double.

On the mound, five  B-W pitchers combined to allow six runs on six hits.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Saturday, April 28 when they host Ohio Northern University in an OAC doubleheader at Heritage Field.   First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. B-W will continue its homestand on  Tuesday, April 24 when it hosts non-league Lourdes University at Heritage Field in a single, nine-inning game at 4:00 p.m.
