Baseball Team Sweeps Wilmington in an OAC Twinbill

WILMINGTON, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team swept Wilmington College in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Saturday, April 14, 2012) at Tewksbury-Delaney Field.

With the two victories, the Yellow Jackets improve to 23-6 overall and 7-3 in the OAC. Wilmington is now 6-17 overall and 3-7 in the OAC.
 
In the first game, B-W started the game off by scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the first. In the bottom half of the inning, the Quakers would cut the lead to one run (2-1) after a three hit inning. Freshman Eric Murphy (Brook Park/Midpark) start the second inning off with a double to left centerfield. Centerfielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria) would sacrifice Murphy to second base. Freshman Ethan Briggs (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) would walk to put runners on first and second with one out for sophomore leftfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute). Toughey would reach first on a fielders choice and Briggs would be retired at second base. Murphy would score on the throwing error by the Wilmington shortstop to make the score 3-1. Senior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls) would step to the plate and rip a homerun over the left field fence to extend the Yellow Jacket lead to four (5-1).

The Quakers would score their final run in the bottom of the fourth inning as B-W would lead 5-2. The Yellow Jackets would add three more runs on four hits to pick up the win, 8-2.

At the plate, Longhitano lead the offense by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, four runs-batted-in, a stolen base and a homerun. Toughey, Murphy, Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) and Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North) would add two hits a piece for B-W. 

On the mound, junior right-hander Dave Redovian (Fairlawn/Copley) would go all seven innings for his fifth win of the season. Redovian gave up two runs (all earned) on four hits and struck out eight batters.

In the second game, the Yellow Jackets tacked on eight runs after four and a half innings on 10 hits. Wilmington would add a run of their on in the bottom half of the fourth inning to make the score, 8-1. In the top of the sixth, second baseman Jay Yost (Bascom/ Hopewell-Loudon) would start the inning by doubling down the rightfield line and then advance to third on a fielding error on the Quaker second baseman. Senior catcher Ryan Nordquist (Alliance) would come to the plate next and  ground out to the second to score Yost (9-1). The Quaker would pick up another run in the bottom of the sixth to pull within seven runs of B-W (9-2).

The Yellow Jackets would add their final two runs in the top of the seventh inning to make the score, 11-2. Wilmington would try to make a run in the ninth by scoring two runs, but came up short in the twinbill (11-4).

At the plate, Toughey would go 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a walk, and a pair of stolen bases. Yost, Ferster and sophomore outfielder Kory Gillissie (Parma/St. Ignatius) would add two hits a piece for the B-W offense.

On the mound, sophomore Jon Capadona (North Royalton) got the start and went six innings. He gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out two batters. Senior Bill Bostelman (Marion/Harding) would come in a for one inning of relief and give up no runs, no hits and strike out one Quaker hitter. Sophomore reliever Cory Waite (Willoughby/South) would come in for one inning of relief and give up just two hits. Jon Tenley (Wadsworth) would relieve Waite for two thirds of an inning and give up two runs (all earned) on three hits and strike out one batter. Sophomore Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) would finish the last third of the game and give up one hit and strike out a Wilmington hitter.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, April 17 when they travel to University Circle for a single game at Case Western Reserve University and then an OAC twinbill at Heidelberg University on April 18 at 1:00 p.m. The next home games are versus Ohio Northern University on Saturday, April 21 in an OAC doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
