Baseball Team Defeats Walsh, 14-4, in Rigsby Classic

PORTSMOUTH, OHIO – The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team defeated NCAA Division II Walsh University, 14-4, today (Sunday, February 26, 2012) today on the final day of the Rigsby Invitational Tournament at Shawnee State University. Yesterday, the Yellow Jackets split a pair of games when they opened with a 6-3 loss to the host school and then beat Walsh, 16-4.

With its win, B-W improved to 2-1 overall. With its loss, Walsh dropped to 0-3 overall.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 10-run advantage in the top of the first inning. B-W then scored one run in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings to extend the lead to 14-0. The Cavaliers then scored three in the seventh and one in the ninth inning to make the outcome closer.

For the game, B-W outhit Walsh, 15-10.

At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by junior
left fielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) and senior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls). Toughey reached base in all six of his at-bats as he recorded a double, two singles, two walks, and got hit by a pitch while driving in one run. Longhitano had five runs-batted-in with two hits and one walk.   

On the mound, junior pitcher Pat Havens (Twinsburg) towed the rubber for the Yellow Jackets and went five scoreless innings while only walking two and striking out eight Cavaliers, en route to picking up his first win of the season. Freshman Anthony Alioto (Mayfield Heights/Mayfield), Cole Winner (Urbana) and Chuck Jones (Kettering/Fairmont) combined to throw the final four innings.

B-W returns to action next Sunday, March 4 when it plays a doubleheader against John Jay (N.Y.) College on the first day of its Annual Spring Break Trip to the Snowbird Classic in Port Clarlotte, Florida. The Yellow Jackets will play eight varsity and four junior varsity games in seven days in the Sunshone State. B-W's first home game is on April 4 against nonleague and cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University at Heritage Field in Berea at 4:00 p.m.
