Baseball Team Shuts Out Lourdes to Set School Record for Wins in a Season

BEREA, OHIO --  The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team shutout NAIA Lourdes University today (Tuesday, April 24, 2012) to set the school-record for wins in a season at 26. The Yellow Jackets cruised to the non-conference victory by a final score of 20-0.

With the victory, the Yellow Jackets improved to 26-9 overall while the Gray Wolves fell 8-41 overall.


B-W jumped out to the early lead as it scored two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning.  Junior centerfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) led off the game with a single to right field and would advance to second on a one out stolen base.  Toughey scored on the RBI single to right field by junior first baseman Jay Yost (Bascom/Hopewell-Loudon).  Freshman rightfielder Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North) reached on an error by the leftfielder and Yost advanced to second.  Chontos stole second base but Yost was throw out at third on the double steal.   Chontos scored on the RBI triple to left center by freshman third baseman Eric Murphy (Brook Park/Midpark).


The Yellow Jackets  would extend their lead as they plated on run on two hits in the bottom of the third inning. Toughey led off the inning with a single.  Toughey advanced to second on a passed ball and then stole third.  Toughey scored on a fielding error by the catcher.  


B-W would exploded for seven runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning.   Freshman rightfielder Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) reached on a fielding error by the first baseman and advanced to second to led off the inning. Ferster advanced to third on a passed ball.  Sophomore designated hitter Joe Hiller (Twinsburg) walked.  Ferster scored and Hiller advanced to third on the RBI ground rule double by senior catcher Ryan Nordquist (Alliance).  Hiller scored and Nordquist advanced to third on the RBI single through the left side by Toughey.  Toughey stole second.  Senior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls) walked to load the bases.  Nordquist and Toughey scored and Longhitano advanced to third on the RBI double to right center by Yost.  Chontos walked to put runners at the corner. Longhitano and Yost scored and Chontos advanced to third on the RBI single up the middle by Murphy.  Chontos scored on the sacrifice fly to right field by Ferster. Murphy went to second on the throwing error by the rightfielder.


The Yellow Jackets kept the offensive attack going when they scored three runs on two hits in the bottom of the sixth inning.


With one out, Chontos reached on an error by leftfielder and advanced to second.  Chontos scored on the RBI triple by Murphy. Senior leftfielder Matt Halata (Olmsted Falls) walked.  With two outs, senior catcher Jordan Barnett (Williard) walked to load the bases.  Murphy and Halata scored and Barnett advanced to third on the RBI single up the middle by sophomore second baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg).


B-W added to the lead in the bottom of seventh inning when it plated five runs on six hits. 

Freshman second baseman Cody Kirk (Warren/Howland) led off the inning with a double to left center.  Kirk scored on the RBI double to left field by junior first baseman Matt Kulick (Wilmot/Fairless). Freshman rightfielder Ethan Briggs (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) walked.  Briggs and Kulick scored on the RBI double to right center by freshman third baseman Michael Fabri (Lorain/Amherst).  Fabri scored on the RBI triple by sophomore designated hitter Drew Mahler (Wooster). Mahler scored on the RBI single up the middle by Gugliotta.


The Yellow Jackets tacked on two runs on one hit in the bottom of the eighth inning. Kulick singled to left field to lead off the inning. Kulick advanced to second and Briggs reached first on the fielding error by the centerfielder. Kulick and Briggs advanced to second and third on a passed ball.  Kulick scored and Briggs advanced to third on the RBI ground out by Fabri.  

Briggs scored the final run on the RBI ground out by Halata.


The B-W offense erupted for 20 runs on 18 hits and was led by Murphy who went 3-for-4 with two triples and three RBI. Toughey also went 3-for-4 with a RBI, three runs scored and three stolen bases. Yost went 2-for-3 with a double,  three RBI and a run scored.  Fabri also added three RBI as he went 1-for-2 with a double. Ferster, Halata, Kulick, Mahler and Nordquist all contributed a RBI.


On the mound, senior Josh Scott (Strongsville) picked up the win to improve to 8-0 on the season as he pitched two innings  with two strikeouts and no walks. Junior David Redovian (Fairlawn/Copley) came in to relieve Scott and he pitched two innings.  Freshman Anthony Alioto Jr. (Mayfield Heights/Mayfield) would pitch the final five innings and recorded five strikeouts with one walk.


The Yellow Jackets are back in action tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday, April 25) when they travel to Hiram for a non-conference nine inning game with Hiram College at 4:00 p.m.   B-W returns home on Saturday, April 28 for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with defending NCAA Division III  National Champion and top-ranked Marietta College at 1:00 p.m.
