Baseball Team Defeats Montclair State (N.J.), 9-2

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLORIDA – The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team ended its Annual Spring Break Trip at the Snowbird Baseball Classic with a four-game winning streak as the Yellow Jackets defeated Monrtclair State (N.J.) University, 9-2. B-W has now won nine of its last 10 games.

With its win, B-W is now 9-2 overall and had a 7-1 record down south. With its loss, Montclair State is now 2-2 overall.

After Montclair State grabbed a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, it was all B-W. The Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the third, one in the fourth, blew the game open with five in the eighth and added another in the ninth.


B-W outhit the Red Hawks, 17-12.


At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by senior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls), freshman first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North) and freshman rightfielder Ethan Briggs (Sarasota, Fla./ Riverview) with three hits each. In addition, junior leftfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Josephs Collegiate) and junior second baseman Jay Yost (Bascom/ Hopewell-Loudon) each had two hits.


Chontos had a double and homerun, scored on run and drove in three others. Longhitano scored once and had to runs batted-in. Briggs led the team with three runs scored and two stolen bases.


On the mound, junior righthander David Redovian (Fairlawn/ Copley) improved to 2-1 as he started, pitched the first six innings, allowed nine base hits, two runs (both earned), struck out four and walked one. He was followed to the mound by sophomore Cory Waite (Willoughby/ South), senior Bill Bostelman (Marion/ Harding) and junior stopper Jon Tenley (Wadsworth) who each pitched a scoreless inning. The trio allowed three hits, struck out one and did not walk a Red Hawk.


B-W returns to action next weekend when they play in the OAC/ AMCC Challenge at V.A. Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. The Yellow Jackets play a doubleheader against LaRoche (Pa.) College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and then faces Pitt-Bradford on Sunday with the first game starting at noon. B-W's first home game is on April 4 against nonleague and cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University at Heritage Field in Berea at 4:00 p.m.


After 11 games, B-W is hitting .379 as a team and outscoring its opposition, 119-32. The top hitter is Chontos at .452 (19-of-42) with 15 runs scored, five doubles, one triple, a homer and 13 RBI. In addition, Longhitano is batting .444 (20-of-45) with 12 runs scored, four doubles and a team-leading 15 RBI and six stolen bases in six attempts.  On the mound, junior righthanded ace Pat Havens (Twinsburg) is 3-0 with a perfect, 0.00 earned run average and 27 strikeouts in 15 innings pitched  for an average of 16.2 strikeouts per game.
