Baseball Team Extends Their Wins Streak as They Sweep Pitt-Bradford

PITTSBURGH, PA. -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team swept the University of Pitt-Bradford (Pa.) in a non-conference doubleheader today (Sunday, March 18) by scores of 3-2 in nine innings and 5-3 at La Roche College (Pa.). Yellow Jackets have now won nine of its last 10 games.

With the two victories, B-W improves to 13-2 overall. Pitt-Bradford falls to 4-10.

In the first game, the Panthers jumped out to a two-run advantage in the top of the third inning. The Yellow Jackets then answered with two of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning to even the score at two apiece. The game was tied through the seven innings which forced it into extra innings. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, B-W junior second baseman Jay Yost (Bascom /Hopewell-Loudon) singled to start the rally. Yost then stole second to move into scoring position.  With two outs, sophomore Drew Mahler (Wooster) would come to the plate and hit a single to move Yost to third. Freshman Alex Green (Pickerington/North) would come into pinch run for Mahler. Green would then steal second base and Yost would also steal home plate on the throw to second for the game-winning run.

At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by Yost, junior centerfielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria), and freshman third baseman Eric Murphy (Brook Park/Midpark). Yost went 2-for-3 with a hit by pitch, two stolen bases, two runs scored, and one run-batted-in. Neuschaefer would go 1-for-4 with a triple in his first game of the year. Murphy went 1-for-3 at the plate with a double, one run scored, and a walk.

On the mound, junior Dave Redovian (Fairlawn/Copley) would go the distance to pick up the win in nine innings. He allowed 2 runs (both earned) on five hits, walking only one batter, and striking out eleven. This was Redovian's first complete game of the season and third win.

In the second game, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three and a half innings on three hits. Pitt-Bradford then scored one run in the bottom of the third to pull within one run of B-W. The Yellow Jackets then added 3 more runs to extend their lead to 5-1 after five innings. The Panthers tacked on two in the bottom of the sixth to make the outcome closer, but B-W would come out victorious, 5-3.

At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by Neuschaefer, senior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls), and freshman first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North). Neuschaefer went two-for-three with two RBI and one stolen base. Longhitano was two-for-four with one run scored, a stolen base, and one RBI. Chontos was one-for-two with one double, two runs scored, two walks, one RBI, and a stolen base.

On the mound, junior Pat Havens (Twinsburg) started and pitched six strong innings, allowing just three runs (all earned). He struck out nine batters while walking three batters to earn his fourth win of the season. Freshman Anthony Alioto Jr. (Mayfield Heights/Mayfield) came in for one scoreless innings of relief work to pick up his first collegiate save.

Baldwin-Wallace College baseball returns to action on Saturday, March 24th, as they travel to Walsh University for a non-conference doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. B-W's first home game is on April 4 against non-league and cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University at Heritage Field in Berea at 4:00 p.m.
