Baseball Team Loses OAC Twinbill versus No.1-Ranked Marietta

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team lost an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Sunday, April 29, 2012) against No.1-ranked Marietta College at Heritage Field. The Pioneers won the first game, 7-0, and captured the nightcap, 7-2.

With its losses, the Yellow Jackets are 27-11 overall and 9-7 in the OAC and stand tied for third place. The 27 wins is a single-season school-record.  Marietta is now 30-5 overall and 14-2 in the OAC and in first place with just two games to play in the league.


In the first game, Marietta jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the top of the first inning, added another in the second and two more in the fifth for a 7-0 advantage.


At the plate, junior first baseman Jay Yost (Bascom/ Hopewell-Loudon) had two of the Yellow Jackets three base hits. On the mound, senior right hander Josh Scott (Strongsville) started and pitched the first four and one-third innings and took the loss to fall to 8-1 overall. He was followed to the mound by sophomore Cory Waite (Willoughby/ South), who finished the fifth inning; senior Bill Bostelman (Marion/ Harding), who tossed a scoreless sixth frame; and junior David Redovian (Fairlawn/ Copley), who pitched a scoreless seventh inning but did walk a batter.


In the second game, B-W grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning as junior leftfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate) singled, move to second base when Yost singled with one out, moved to third base via a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman RF Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North). B-W increased its lead to 2-0 in the second inning as sophomore CF Kory Gillissie (Parma/ Cleveland St. Ignatius) walked, stole second and scored on a base hit by sophomore 2B Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg). Marietta then tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the third frame.


The Pioneers broke the game open with three runs in the seventh inning and one each in the eighth and ninth innings.


At the plate, Toughey and Yost led the way as each had a pair of base hits. On the mound, sophomore Jon Capadona started and pitched the first five plus innings and suffered the loss to fall to 4-2 overall. He was followed to the hill by junior
Jon Tenley (Wadsworth) and freshman Anthony Alioto Jr. (Mayfield Heights/ Mayfield).

The Yellow Jackets are back in action next Saturday, May 5 when they end the regular season by hosting Otterbein University in an OAC doubleheader at Heritage Field at 1:00 p.m. The four-team 2012 OAC Playoffs are May 10-12 at the site of the regular season champion.
