Baseball Team Sweeps Capital in an OAC Twinbill

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team swept Capital University in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Thursday, April 12, 2012) at Heritage Field. The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 6-1 and captured the nightcap, 10-2. It was the first OAC sweep by B-W since 2009 when the Jackets also swept the Crusaders.

With the sweep, the Yellow Jackets improved to 21-6 overall and 5-3 in the OAC. The 21 wins is the most in a season since the 2003-2004 season when the team went 20-14 overall. Capital is now 12-13 overall and 1-6 in the OAC.

In the first game, junior pitcher Pat Havens (Twinsburg) improved to 7-1 on the season with his second straight complete game.  Havens pitched six scoreless innings before allowing his first run in the top of the seventh to break up a 13 inning scoreless streak.  Havens allowed just the one run on six hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.

B-W took the lead in the bottom of the second inning as it scored three runs on no hits.  Senior catcher Ryan Nordquist (Alliance) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  Freshman designated hitter Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) reached on the fielding error by the third baseman and Nordquist would go to second.  Freshman third baseman Eric Murphy (Brook Park/Midpark) would reach on the fielding error by the shortstop and would eventually make it to third on the throwing error by the centerfielder.  Nordquist would score on the first error and Ferster would come all the home from first base on the second error of the at bat.  Murphy would beat out the throw home on the fielder's choice and RBI by junior centerfielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria).

The Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the bottom of the third when they scored two runs on two hits.  Freshman first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North) led off the inning with a double to right field and would advance to third on a wild pitch.  Junior second baseman Jay Yost (Bascom/Hopewell-Loudon) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a stole base. Chontos and Yost would both score on the RBI single through the right side by Ferster.

B-W would close out its scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning when it scored one run on two hits.  Yost led off the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on the sacrifice bunt by NordquistFerster would advance Yost to third on a sacrifice fly.  Yost scored on a RBI base knock by Murphy.

The Crusaders would score their lone run in the top of the seventh as it plated the run on two hits.

The Yellow Jacket offense scored six runs on six hits and were led by junior leftfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) who went 2-for-3.  Ferster was 1-for-2 with two RBI and run scored.  Chontos, Murphy and Yost each contributed a hit while Yost scored twice.

In the second game, B-W jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning as it scored two runs on two hits.  Toughey led off the inning with a single up the middle.  Toughey stole second and would score on the RBI double by senior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls).  Longhitano stole third and would score on a passed ball.

Capital would tie the game and scored its only two runs of the game in the top of the fourth inning on one hit.

The Yellow Jackets would regain the lead when they scored two runs on three hits in the bottom half of the fourth inning.  Yost led off the inning with a double down the left field line.  Nordquist would follow with a walk.  Yost scored on the RBI single by Ferster and Nordquist advanced to second.  Murphy would load the bases with a infield single.  Nordquist would score on the sacrifice fly by freshman rightfielder Ethan Briggs (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview).

B-W would add a run in the fifth on one hit.  Longhitano struck but reached first base on the throwing error by the catcher.  Chontos singled to right field and advanced Longhitano to second.  Yost reached on a fielder's choice and Longhitano would go to third.  Longhitano would score on the RBI ground out by Nordquist.

The Yellow Jackets closed out the scoring as they exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth on four hits.  Neuschaefer singled to right field and advanced to second when Briggs was hit by a pitch.  Toughey loaded bases on an bunt single.  Neuschaefer would scored on the RBI walk by Longhitano to kept the bases juiced.  Chontos singled to left to score Briggs and Toughey and Longhitano advanced to second.  Yost would reload the bases with a single through the left side.  Longhitano scored on the sacrifice fly by Nordquist.  The bases were loaded again when Ferster reached on the error by the second baseman.  Chontos would score the game's final run on a passed ball.

The B-W offense scored 10 runs on 11 hits and was led by Toughey (2-for-4), Longhitano (2-for-4) and Chontos (2-for-5) with two hits a piece.  Toughey added two runs scored, Longhitano had two RBI and three runs scored and Chontos contributed two RBI and a run scored.

On the mound, senior Josh Scott (Strongsville) remained undefeated on the season and now has a record of 6-0.  Scott pitched seven innings an allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with a season-high eight strikeouts and one walk.  Sophomore Cory Waite (Willoughby/South) pitched a scoreless eighth inning as he allowed just one hit.  Junior Jon Tenley (Wadsworth) came in to pitch the ninth inning and allowed one hit with a strikeout.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, April 14 when they travel to Wilmington, Ohio to play OAC-foe Wilmington College in a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. B-W also plays a single game at Case Western Reserve University on April 17 at 4:00 p.m. and an OAC twinbill at Heidelberg University on April 18 at 1:00 p.m. before returning home to play Ohio Northern University on Saturday, April 21 in an OAC doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
