NEW WILMINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA – The Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team opened the 2013 season by splitting a pair of matches at the Westminster (Pa.) College Invitational Tournament on Friday at the Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.
The Yellow Jackets (1-1) blanked The College of Wooster by scores of 25-20, 26-24 and 25-23 but fell to host Westminster by scores of 25-21, 20-25, 10-25 and 16-25.
In the opener versus Wooster, the Yellow Jackets were led offensively by junior right side hitter Markema Winters (Akron/Firestone) with nine kills and followed by sophomore Anna Miley (West Salem/Northwestern) with seven. Senior setter Emily Nagle (Columbia Station/Columbia) and junior setter Katie Primeau (Pemberville/Eastwood) each hit double figures in assists with 15 and 14 respectively.
Defensively, senior defensive specialist Taylor Burns (Tiffin/Fostoria St. Wendelinn) led the way with 14 digs, while freshman defensive specialist Arlayna Newcomer (Norwalk/St. Paul) added 12.
Versus Westminster, Winters once again led the BW offense as she tallied 10 kills and Nagle had 17 assists. Senior middle hitter Kayla Harris (Lima) contributed six blocks while Nagle and Newcomer each had 13 digs apiece.
The Yellow Jackets will wrap up play at the Westminster Invitational tomorrow against Penn State Behrend at 11 a.m. and Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) University at 1 p.m.
