BW Volleyball Splits In Finale of Marcia French Invitational

BEREA, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team split a pair of matches on the final day of the 15th Annual Marcia French Memorial Invitational in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center on Friday.  The 10-team tournament is being co-hosted by BW and Case Western Reserve University.

Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) University was the invitational champion followed by Westminster (Pa.) College as the runner-up.  The Yellow Jackets finished tied for fourth.

BW (4-5) blanked The College of Wooster in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-9 and 26-24 but fell to Buffalo State (N.Y.) University in four sets by scores of 20-25, 25-23, 21-25 and 18-25.

In the opener versus Wooster, the Yellow Jackets were led offensively by senior middle hitter Kayla Harris (Lima) and junior middle hitter Markema Winters Akron/Firestone) as  each had 11 kills. Senior setter Emily Nagle (Columbia Station/Columbia) and junior setter Katie Primeau (Pemberville/Eastwood) each hit double figures in assists with 22 and 11 respectively.  

Defensively, the Yellow Jackets were led by senior libero Shannon Deleur (Olmsted Falls) who recorded 16 digs. Senior defensive specialist/outside hitter Taylor Burns (Tiffin/Fostoria St. Wendelinn) and Nagle each contributed nine digs.

Versus Buffalo State, the BW offense was led by Burns with eight kills. Nagle and Primeau once each hit double figures in assists with 17 and 16 respectively.  

On defense, Deleur led the way with 26 digs followed by Burns with 21, Nagle and freshman defensive specialist Allyson Iwanski (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) each with 15 and Primeau with 14.

For her efforts in the tournament senior middle hitter Colleen Bonacci (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) was selected to the All-Tournament Team selected by the coaches.

The Yellow Jackets remain at home when they welcome the Terriers of Hiram College to the Ursprung Gymnasium for a non-conference match on Wednesday, September 11 at 7 p.m.
