BEREA – The Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team defeated Muskingum University, 3-0, in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams inside the Ursprung Gymnasium.
The Yellow Jackets (8-11 overall, 1-0 OAC) defeated the Fighting Muskies (9-8 overall, 0-1 OAC) in three sets by scores of 28-26, 25-21 and 25-21. This ended BW's five-match losing streak.
BW was led offensively by senior middle hitter Colleen Bonacci (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) with 10 kills. Senior middle hitter Kayla Harris (Lima) and senior defensive specialist/outside hitter Taylor Burns (Tiffin/Fostoria St. Wendelin) recorded nine kills each.
Senior setter Emily Nagle (Columbia Station/Columbia) and junior setter Katie Primeau (Pemberville/Eastwood) both hit double figures in assists with 20 and 18, respectively.
Defensively, senior libero Shannon Deleur (Olmsted Falls) recorded 15 digs and Burns contributed 14.
With her fifth dig today, Deleur moved into eighth place on the all-time digs list. She now has 1,332 career digs, passing Kelsey Hillis (2004-07) who had 1,321.
In addition, Burns moved into 12th place on the all-time digs list with her 11th of 14 digs. She now has 1,187 career digs, passing Darci Christopher (1997-2000), who had 1,183.
BW is back in action on Friday, October 5 when it travels to Westerville for an OAC match with Otterbein University at 7 p.m. The next home match is on Saturday, October 12 against Ohio Northern University on Homecoming at 12:30 p.m.
