BW Volleyball Falls on Day 1 of OAC/HCAC Challenge

BEXLEY – The Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on the first day of the Ohio Athletic Conference versus Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Challenge hosted by Capital University. 

The Yellow Jackets (7-8) were defeated by Hanover (Ind.) College in straight sets by scores of 23-25, 15-25 and 24-26. BW then fell in five sets to Transylvania (Ky.) University by scores of 27-25, 17-25, 25-21 and 10-15.

In the opener versus Hanover, the Yellow Jackets were led offensively by senior middle hitter Colleen Bonacci (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) with eight kills. Senior setter Emily Nagle (Columbia Station/Columbia) and junior setter Katie Primeau (Pemberville/Eastwood) set up the offense and each hit double figures in assists with 18 and 11 respectively.

Defensively, senior libero Shannon Deleur (Olmsted Falls) led with 20 digs.   Senior defensive specialist Taylor Burns (Tiffin/Fostoria St. Wendelin) contributed 12 digs and Bonacci added eight blocks.

Against Transylvania, Bonacci once again lead the Yellow Jacket offense with 12 kills.  Nagle and Primeau each had 19 assists.  Defensively, three BW players that recorded double figures in kills led by Nagle with 19.  Deleur added 18 and Burns contributed 12.

With her 30th of 38 digs on the night, including her of 10th of 18 in the match with Transylvania, Deleur moved into 10th place on the school's all-time digs list with1,245.  Deleur, who passed Melanie Schmitz (1990-93) with 1,236 digs, now needs 56 digs to tie Sarah Gordon (2000-02) in ninth place with 1,301.

The Yellow Jackets close out the OAC-HCAC Challenge on Saturday with matches against Bluffton University at 9:30 a.m. and the College of Mount St. Joseph at 1:30 p.m.   BW will then play cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University on Tuesday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m.  The next home match is on Saturday, September 28 when the Yellow Jackets open OAC play against Muskingum University on Family and Community Day at 12:30 p.m.
