BW Men’s Basketball Cruises to Victory Against Heidelberg

BEREA, Ohio – Senior All-OAC guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name) scored a game-high 21 points as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Heidelberg University, 86-67, in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.  

BW (9-7, 5-4 OAC) has now won five straight against Heidelberg (5-11, 1-8 OAC) and increased its all-time series lead to 69-44. The Yellow Jackets have played the Student Princes more than any other opponent in the sport of men's basketball.

In addition to Krakowiak, who now has 1,183 career points, for BW, senior three-time All-OAC power forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) scored 19 points and now has 1,423 career points. Senior forward Tyler Ferrell (Brunswick) chipped in 16 points and junior point guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) had 12.

Heidelberg was led by senior guard Mike Petrie with 19 points. Sophomore guard Deonte Holder tallied 15 while senior guard Keith Mackie and junior forward Cole Williams each contributed 10 points.

BW opened the game on a 5-0 run when Crowe buried a three-pointer with 18:25 remaining.    The Student Princes would cut the lead down to 15-11 on a layup by Holder at 15:41.  The Yellow Jackets used a 14-4 run to extend their lead to 29-15 as senior guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland) knocked down a trey with 11:33 left.

Heidelberg used a 7-3 run to cut the lead down to 32-22 on a jumper by Petrie at the 9:42 mark.  BW quickly responded with a 7-0 run of its own to push the lead to 39-22 on a jumper by freshman guard Zack Brandy (Hudson) with 7:53 remaining.

The Yellow Jackets outscored the Student Princes 13-7 over the remainder of the half and pushed its lead to as many as 27 points at 52-27 on a pair of free throws by Ferrell at 1:33.  BW led 52-29 at the intermission.

Heidelberg opened the second on an 11-4 run to cut the lead down to 56-40 when Petrie buried a triple with 17:08 left to play.   The Student Princes cut the lead down to 16 on three other occasions with the last coming at 67-51 on a pair of free throws by sophomore forward Jackson Blue at 9:40. 

The Yellow Jackets responded with a 13-2 run to push the lead back to a game-high tying 27 points at 80-53 on a three-pointer by Ferrell with 5:32 remaining.  Heidelberg closed out the game on a 14-6 run.

BW is back in action on Saturday, January 25 when it travels to Columbus to play Capital University in an OAC game in the Capital Center at 2:00 p.m.  The next home game is on Wednesday, January 29 when the Yellow Jackets hosts Ohio Northern University in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
