Krakowiak’s Career-Night Not Enough as BW Comes Up Short Against Mount Union

BEREA, Ohio – Baldwin Wallace University senior All-OAC guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name) scored a career-best 36 points and set a school record for three-pointers in a game with nine, but the Yellow Jackets lost to Ohio Athletic Conference-leading the University of Mount Union, 104-98, in an OAC game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. 

In addition to Krakowiak for BW (10-10 overall and 6-7 in the OAC), junior point guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) tallied his second career double-double with 19 points and a career-high 13 assists.  Senior forward Skyler Simpson (Centerburg) scored a career-high 13 points as he was perfect from the field, including making all three of his three-pointers. Senior guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland) chipped in with 12 points in his first start or the season.  The Yellow Jackets as a school record for three-pointers made in a game with 18.
Krakowiak's 36 points now give him 1,253 in his career and moves him into 18th place on the all-time scoring list. Senior three-time All-OAC forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick), who did not play in this game, is 12th all-time with 1,475 points.

Mount Union (16-3, 11-1 OAC) had six players score in double figures, led by sophomore forward Jarrett Ruffin with 21 points and a game-best six blocked shots.  Senior guard T.J. Gillespie tallied 20 points, freshman guard Miles Griffin had 15, freshman guard DeAllen Jackson contributed 13 and junior guard Nate Jacubec and sophomore guard Cody Dillon each chipped in 11.
BW opened the scoring when senior forward Tyler Ferrell (Brunswick) scored on a layup with 19:31 remaining.  The Purple Raiders responded with an 8-0 run to take an 8-2 lead on a pair of free throws by Ruffin at the 17:13 mark.   The Yellow Jackets tied the game at 8-8 on back-to-back three-pointers from Crowe and Krakowiak with 16:27 remaining. 

After the game was tied at 14-14, B W went on an 8-2 run to take a 22-16 lead on a trey by Krakowiak at 12:36. Mount Union answered right back with a 10-0 run to take a 26-22 lead on a trey by Griffin with 9:59 remaining. 

The Purple Raiders then went on an 8-3 run to take a 34-25 lead on a jumper by senior forward Jimmy Darnley at the 6:09 mark.  The Yellow Jackets responded with an 11-6 run to cut the lead down to 41-36 on a three-pointer by Krakowiak with 2:32 remaining.  Mt. Union closed out the half on an 8-2 run to led 49-38 at the intermission.

BW opened the second half on a 16-4 run to take a 54-53 lead on a pair of free throws by junior forward Matt Dennis (Spring Hill, Fla./ Nature Coast Technical) with 15:36 remaining.  The Purple Raiders responded with a 7-0 run to take a 60-54 lead on a layup by Gillespie at 14:35.

The Yellow Jackets answered to cut the lead to 76-74 on a three-pointer by Fairhurst with 10:02 remaining.  Mt. Union responded with a 5-2 run to take an 81-76 lead at 8:42 as Jackson scored all five points.

BW cut the lead to 92-86 when Krakowiak knocked down his school-record ninth three-pointer with 5:01 left to play, and to 95-93 on a trey by Fairhurst at 3:03; but the Purple Raiders outscored BW 9-5 down the stretch to secure the win and remain in first place.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, February 8 when they travel to Wilmington to play the Fighting Quakers of Wilmington College in the Fred Razik Arena at 3 p.m. The next BW home game is on Wednesday, Feb. 12 when it hosts OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University on "Swarm the Gym" Night at 7:30 p.m.
