Men' Basketball Lose at No. 8 Wooster in Van Wie Rotary Tourney Opener

WOOSTER, Ohio – Despite four Baldwin Wallace University double-figure scorers, its men's basketball team lost at No.8-ranked The College of Wooster, 76-71, tonight in the first round of the annual Al Van Wie Tournament in the Timken Physical Education Center.
 
With its loss, BW (1-1) plays Spalding (Ky.) in the consolation game tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.  In the first game tonight, Wheaton (Ill.) defeated Spalding, 72-47.  Wooster (2-0) advances to play Wheaton in the championship game at 6:00 p.m.
 
For BW, senior center Tyler Ferrell (Brunswick) led the way with a career-high 18 points, three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) had 17, junior point guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) had 13 and senior two-time All-OAC forward Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name) had 12 and grabbed a career and game-high eight rebounds. Wooster was led by senior guard Xavier Brown's game–high 31 with points.
 
Wooster scored the first four points to grab a 4-0 lead at 18:48 when freshman forward Dan Fanelly made a layup. BW scored the next four points and tied it at 4-4 at 17:42 when Payne made a layup. The game also was tied at 7-7 and 9-9 before Wooster's Brown scored four straight points and the Fighting Scots built a 13-9 lead at 14:49.
 
After a BW foul shot by Ferrell at 14:33 cut the lead to three, the Fighting Scots scored four straight again for a 17-10 lead at 13:42 when sophomore forward DeVaughn Wingard made a layup on a fastbreak. That led to a BW timeout.
 
BW fought back with a basket from Crowe at 11:43 and a foul shot from Payne at 11:03 to close to 17-13. Crowe hit a three-pointer at 10:31 and made a layup at 9:23 to complete an 8-0 run to give the Yellow Jackets their first lead at 18-17. A layup by senior backup center Aaron Selmek (Delaware/ Columbus St. Francis DeSales) at 8:50 gave BW a 20-17 lead before a Scot basket by senior forward Kenny DeBoer at 8:20 cut the lead to 20-19.
 
BW senior wing Skyler Simpson (Centerburg) sandwiched a pair of triples around a Wooster basket to give BW its biggest lead at 26-21 with 6:33 left before halftime.  Wooster scored five straight points to tie the game for the fourth time at 26-all with 5:32 left when Brown drove to the hoop and made a layup.
 
Krakowiak tied it at 28 with a layup at 3:57, but Wooster grabbed a 30-28 lead at 3:44 on two free throws by Brown before a Krakowiak trey gave BW a 31-30 lead with 3:16 left. The Scots ended the half on a 9-7 run and grabbed a 39-38 lead 1.7 seconds before the intermission when senior guard Doug Thorpe drove the lane and scored.
 
BW took a 40-39 lead at 19:27 when Ferrell made two foul shots.  The game was tied three more times with the last at 47-47 with 16:46 left when DeBoer drove the lane and scored. The Scots continued their run with five more points to take a 52-47 lead when senior guard Scott Purcell made a three-pointer at 15:38.
 
A Crowe trey at 14:58 cut the lead to 52-50 but Brown's two foul shots at 14:09 made it 54-50. After a Ferrell hoop at 13:56 made it 54-52, Wooster scored five straight points to rebuild its largest lead of the night at 59-52 with 11:47 left when Fanelly made a layup.
 
A pair of foul shots by Payne at 11:27 made the score 59-54. That was followed by a scoreless streak of 3:38 before Brown's two charity tosses restored Wooster's lead to seven at 61-54 with 7:49 remaining.  BW went on a 9-2 run and tied it for the ninth time at 63-63 at 6:08 when Krakowiak nailed a three-pointer from 25 feet.
 
Brown gave the lead back to Wooster with a triple at 4:56 for a 66-63 advantage. A Ferrell layup at 4:26 made it a 66-65 score. A DeBoer layup gave Wooster back its three-point lead at 68-65 with 3:13 left, but Payne nailed a triple at 2:41 to tie it for the 10th time at 68-68.
 
The Fighting Scots again gained the lead when Thorpe hit a 15-foot jumper at 2:21 for a 70-68 advantage, but Ferrell tied it again at 70-70 when he made a layup at 2:08. Undaunted, the Scots got another Thorpe jumper at 1:41 to regain the lead at 72-70.
 
BW had two possessions to tie it, but failed. When Thorpe was fouled with nine seconds left, he made both of his pressure charity tosses tor a 74-70 lead. A Crowe foul shot with 5.3 seconds left ended the Yellow Jacket scoring and
 
Following tomorrow's consolation game, BW next plays on Tuesday, Nov. 26 when it travels to Olivet, Michigan to play Olivet College at 6:00 p.m. Following the Thanksgiving holiday, the Yellow Jackets open Ohio Athletic Conferencec play on Wednesday, December 4 when they travel to Ada, Ohio to play Ohio Northern University at 7:30 p.m. The OAC home opener is on Saturday, Dec. 7 versus Capital University at 3:00 p.m.
