BW Men Beat Spalding (Ky.), 78-53, at Wooster Tourney

WOOSTER, OHIO -- Senior center Tyler Ferrell (Brunswick) scored a team-high 18 points as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Spalding (Ky.) University, 78-53, today (Saturday, November 23, 2013) in the consolation game and place third at the annual Al Van Wie Wooster Rotary Tournament in the Timken Physical Education Center.  The Yellow Jackets opened play with a 76-71 loss to No.8-ranked and host Wooster on Friday. 

In addition to Ferrell for BW (2-1), senior three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference forwrd Kyle Payne (Brunswick) had 16 points and junior point guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) had 13 points and six assists. For their efforts, both Ferrell and Payne were named to the all-tournament team. Spalding (0-5) was led by senior forward William Barber's game-high 19 markers. 

The Yellow Jackets gained a 2-0 lead at 18:46 when Ferrell made a jumper shot. BW outscored Spalding 9-6 to take an 11-6 lead at 16:07 when Crowe made a three-pointer. The Golden Eagles had a 5-1 spurt to close to 12-11 at 14:55 when Barber made two foul shots and took a 15-14 lead at 11:39 on two charity tosses by Goeing.

Spalding continued its run and grew its lead to 18-14 at 9:45 before BW scored seven straight points. Freshman Brandon Gleim (Hilliard/ Davidson) scored the first two points of his Yellow Jacket career on a layup at 8:52 to make it 18-16 and freshman point guard Zack Brady (Hudson) nailed a jumper at 8:18 to tie it 18-18. BW regained a 21-18 lead at 7:22 when senior center Aaron Selmek (Delaware/ Columbus de Sales) made a layup, was fouled and made his free throw.

The Yellow Jackets continued to build their lead to 26-18 and made it a 12-0 run when Ferrell hit a jumper at 5:38. After a Spalding basket made it 26-20, Ferrell struck again when he made a layup at 4:04, was fouled and completed the "old-fashioned" three-point play by making his free throw for a 29-20 advantage. When Payne made one-of-two foul shots with 52 seconds left before the first half intermission, BW had its biggest lead at 35-24.

In the second half, BW gained a 37-24 lead at 19:10 when Payne made a layup. The lead grew to 15 points at 42-27 at 17:07 when Krakowiak canned a triple. Spalding then cut BW's lead to 10 points on two separate occassions with the last at 45-35 with 13:22 let when freshman guard Jovante Lavender made two foul shots.  But that was the closest the Golden Eagles would get to the Yellow Jackets.

BW's largest lead of the game was the final score of 25 points at 78-53 with two seconds left when junior forward Reid Crossen (Jeromesville/ Ashland Hillsdale) made two foul shots.

BW next plays on Tuesday, Nov. 26 when it travels to Olivet, Michigan to play Olivet College at 6:00 p.m. Following the Thanksgiving holiday, the Yellow Jackets open Ohio Athletic Conferencec play on Wednesday, December 4 when they travel to Ada, Ohio to play Ohio Northern University at 7:30 p.m. The OAC home opener is on Saturday, Dec. 7 versus Capital University at 3:00 p.m.
