BW Men’s Basketball Team Loses at John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OHIO – Senior three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, but the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team lost at OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 71-69, tonight in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.  The JCU win ended a three-game BW winning streak and closed the gap in the all-time series lead to 58-52.
 
With its loss, BW is now 7-7 overall and 3-4 in the OAC.  With its win, JCU is now 10-3 overall and 4-3 in the OAC.
 
In addition to Payne for the Yellow Jackets, junior point guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) had 12 points and senior two-time All-OAC guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/ Holy Name) had 11. With his 19 points, Payne now has 1,386 career points to stand in14th place all-time. With his 11 points, Krakowiak has 1,153 career points to stand 20th all-time.  JCU was led by sophomore forward Simon Kucharewicz's 14 with  points.
 
After three ties, the Blue Streaks gained a 13=8 lead at 14:32 when Kucharewicz made a short jumper along the right baseline. BW came right back with a 7-0 run to take a 15-13 lead when Payne made a layup, was fouled and completed the three-point play at 13:15.
 
After five more ties, with the last at 23-23 at 8:21, JCU went on an 8-0 spurt, spurred by a pair of Hendrickson triples to lead 31-23 at 6:57. The lead grew to 12 points at 37-25 at 5:28 when junior guard David Hendrickson nailed his fourth trey in a span of 2:05.
 
BW had a 7-0 spurt to close to 39-34 when Crowe made one of two foul shots. The teams traded baskets and JCU went into the lockeroom at halftime with a 41-36 lead.
 
BW got within one point at 43-42 when Crowe connected on one of two foul shots at 17:39, but the Blue Streaks had a 18-8 run to take a 61-50 lead at 10:24 when Starks buried a triple. A 5-0 run by the Yellow Jackets closed the gap to 61-55 at 9:13 when senior guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland) canned a three-pointer.
 
After JCU regained an eight-point lead at 63-55 at 8:21, BW 12-6 run to close to 69-67 with 52.3 seconds left when Payne canned a three-pointer. Sophomore guard Joey Vuyancih made two foul shots with 18.9 left to give JCU a 71-67 advantage, but Crowe countered with a layup at 11.3 seconds to make it 71-69.
 
JCU then threw away its inbounds pass and BW had a shot to tie or win with 10 seconds left, but a Payne jumper in the lane with two seconds left was off the mark and JCU earned its win.
 
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 18 when they host OAC-rival Muskingum University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 3:00 p.m. BW also hosts Heidelberg University in Berea on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m.
