Men’s Basketball Team Loses at Capital, 73-69

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior point guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) scored 17 points, but the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team lost at OAC-rival Capital University, 73-69, in the Capital Center.  The win ended a two-game BW winning streak.
 
With its loss, BW is now 9-8 overall and 5-5 in the OAC.  Capital is now 8-9 overall and 5-5 in the OAC.
 
In addition to Crowe for BW, Senior three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) had 16 points and freshman forward Jaelen Hollinger (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) had a career-high 11 points.
 
With his 16 points today, Payne now has 1,439 career points to rank 12th on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list. In addition, senior two-time All-OAC guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name) had seven points and now has 1,190 career points to rank 19th. Capital was led by freshman guard Curt Giese's game-high 27 points.
 
In the first half, Capital jumped out to a 5-0 lead at 18:44 when junior forward Andrew Bolka made a jump shot. The lead grew to six at 10-4 at 17:18 when junior guard Mike Augustine made his second three-pointer.
 
BW came back to tie the game at 12-12 at 13:48 when senior backup center Aaron Selmek (Delaware/ Columbus St. Francis de Sales) made a layup.  The Crusaders countered with a 7-0 run to take a 19-12 advantage at 9:54 when Giese canned a triple. Not be outdone, BW had an 11-4 run to tie it at 23-23 at 3:49 when Hollinger made a jumper.
 
Capital got back-to-back three-point plays to take a 29-23 lead at 2:24 and BW countered with a Matt Dennis (Spring Hill, Fla./Nature Coast Technical) foul shot to make it 29-25 at 2:09.  Twice the Crusader lead reached seven points again, but BW scored the final five points of the first stanza, including a dunk and three-point play by Payne with 11.2 seconds left, and trailed 33-31 at the intermission.
 
In the second half, Payne gave BW its first lead of the game when he made a driving layup, was fouled and converted the free throw for a 34-33 lead at 19:20.  The Crusaders came back with a 15-6 run to take a 48-40 lead at 13:38 when Bolka made a scoop shot in the lane.
 
BW outscored Capital 10-2 to tie the game at 50-50 at 10:01 when senior guard Skyler Simpson (Centerburg) nailed a three-pointer. Undaunted, the Crusaders responded with a 14-6 run to rebuild its eight-point lead at 64-56 with 5:02 left.
 
BW got as close as three points at 69-66 with 1:15 left when Payne made a driving layup. After a defensive stop, the Yellow Jackets had two chances to tie, but a Payne triple was off the mark with 23.7 seconds left and Krakowiak made one of two foul shots with 15.1 seconds left to make it 69-67.
 
BW fouled Capital junior guard Adam Blake with 7.8 seconds left. He made the first free throw to make it 70-67 and "iced" the game with his second.
 
BW is back in action on Wednesday, January 29 when the Yellow Jackets hosts Ohio Northern University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m.
