Fourteen BW Winter Student-Athletes Named Academic All-OAC

BEREA, OHIO -  Fourteen Baldwin Wallace University winter sports student-athletes have been named to the 2013-2014 Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference team.

The fourteen are women’s basketball student-athletes Audrey Smolik (Strongsville), Allyson Helleis (Rocky River), Erin Allen (Girard, Pa./ Girard) and Steph Kumler (Jupiter, Fla./ Christian); men’s basketball players Skyler Simpson (Centerburg), Zach Warner (Clyde), Josh Ingle (Shelby) and Ryan Walsh (Easton, Pa./ Easton Area); women’s swimmers Angela Musille (Canton/ GlenOak), Chandler Ashbaugh (Napoleon) and Emily Payne (Ligonier, Pa./ Ligonier Valley); men’s swimmer Nathan Onchuck (Darien, Ill./ Hinsdale South); and wrestlers Ben LeBrun (Strongsville) and Aric Cross (Geneva).  Smolik, Musille, Payne and Ingle are repeat award winners and this is the third time for Musille.

Smolik
is a junior with a 3.87 grade point average in middle childhood education and was the 2014 OAC Scholar-Athlete for the Month of January. She leads the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 12.0 points-per-game and will play in this weekend’s NCAA Division III National Tournament “Sweet 16”.  She also grabs 4.0 rebounds-per-game and has made 28 three-pointers for the 22-6 overall Yellow Jackets. In addition to this being her second Academic All-OAC award, she was an All-OAC pick a year ago, was the BW Invitational Most Valuable Player and an OAC Player of the Week selection.

Helleis
is a sophomore guard with a 3.67 grade point average and majors in pre-pyhsical therapy. She plays a key role off the bench and averages 2.3 ppg. and 1.3 rpg. in all 28 games with 47 assists, 13 steals and seven three-pointers. 

Allen
is a sophomore guard with a 3.71 grade point average in athletic training. She also comes off the bench and scores 1.7 ppg. in 24 contests with nine assists, four treys and two steals.

Kumler
is a sophmore forward with a 3.61 grade average in communication studies. She has played in 15 games, scores 1.5 ppg. and shoots 56.3 percent from the floor onn nine-of-16 attempts.

Simpson
helped the men’s basketball squad to a 14-13 record this season and was a four-year varsity contributor. The six-foot and seven-inch senior carries a 3.53 grade average in middle childhood education and intends to teach and coach following graduation. He played in all 27 games and averaged 3.6 ppg., grabbed 1.9 rpg. and had 27 three-pointers. He earned the Al Sirat Grotto Player of the Game award this winter.

Warner
is a sophomore forward with a 3.91 grade average in pre-physical therapy. He came off the bench and played in 10 games and averaged 0.9 ppg. with two triples and a steal.

Ingle is a junior forward with a 3.79 grade average in mathematics. He also came off the bench in seven games and averaged 1.3 rpg. This is his second straight appearance on the Academic All-OAC team. 

Walsh
is a sophomore international buisness major with a 3.81 grade point average. He came off the bench and played in six contests and contributed 0.3 ppg. and 0.5 rpg.

Musille
is a senior communication dissorders with a 3.91 grade point average who is being honored for the third straight year. She was a four-year standout who earned multiple OAC titles and All-OAC accolades, set multiple school-records and ended her career as one of the best to ever wear the Brown & Gold. She owns She hold school individual records in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.59), 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.13) and 200-yard individual medley (2:13.00), and as a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:42.14) In addition, Musille earned OAC Swimmer of the Week honors five times during her career.

Ashbaugh
is a sophomore witha 3.775 grade average in early childhood education. She had a strong second season and earned All-OAC honors at the OAC Championship Meet and earned OAC Swimmer of the Week honors on February 3. The Dean’s List student was the BW Rookie of the Year last winter.

Payne
is making her second appearance on the Academic All-OAC team. She carries a 3.768 grade average in public relations. The junior Dean’s List student had season-bests of 27.25 seconds in the 50 free, 59.55 seconds in the 100 free, 36.27 seconds in the 50-yard breaststroke, 1:14.50 in the 100 breaststroke and 1:15.38 in the 100-yard butterfly.

Onchuck
is a sophomore with a 3.710 grade average in sustainability.  The Dean’s List student who earned OAC Swimmer of the Week honors as a freshman had a season-best time this winter of 22.10 seconds in the 50 free.

LeBrun
is a sophomore who carries a 3.773 grade average in international studies and business. The starter at 174 pounds had a 24-12 record with five pins and now owns a 40-31 career mark after two seasons. He also is a Dean’s List student.

Cross
is a sophomore who carries a 3.703 grade average in BW’s 3:2 accounting program. Despite injuries each of his first two seasons, he has compiled a 1-16 record and been part of BW’s wrestling resurgence. He also is a Dean’s List student and a member of the BW Accounting Association.
