Orts Named Football Offensive Coordinator

BEREA, Ohio – Baldwin Wallace University Head Football Coach Jim Hilvert has announced the hiring of Michael Orts as the Yellow Jackets' offensive coordinator.

"I am very excited to welcome Michael to the BW Football Family," said Hilvert. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from an elite NCAA Division III program. His innovativeness and creativity will be a great addition to the staff."

Orts comes to BW after serving as the pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at his alma mater Saint John's (Minn.) University for nine seasons. He was a member of a Johnnies' staff that won four Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) championships, made six NCAA Division National Playoff appearances, and posted an overall record of 77-18.

During his time with Saint John's, he mentored the 2018 Gagliardi Trophy Award winner and the 2019 award runner-up, which is the Division III equivalent to the Heisman Trophy.  In addition, Orts coached the 2019 Division III passing yard leader, the 2018 Division III passing touchdown leader and passing efficiency leader and the 2015 NCAA Division III passing efficiency leader.

"I am really excited to be joining Coach Hilvert and the BW staff in Berea," stated Orts.  "I would not have left my alma mater and a place I have called home for fifteen years unless it was for a special opportunity, and BW certainly is special. To be coaching with this staff, these student-athletes and in an historic program is a dream come true. I am looking forward to getting to know the team and taking on the challenges in the OAC with them. Go Jackets!"

In addition to Saint John's, he served as the co-offensive coordinator, pass game coordinator, quarterbacks, and wide receivers coach at NCAA Division III University of Minnesota Crookston for one season.  Orts had a coaching stop at Maple Grove (Minn.) High School where he was the wide receivers coach, pass game coordinator, running backs coach, junior varsity head coach, junior varsity offensive coordinator and video coordinator for two seasons.

He earned Master of Science in physical education from Southwest Minnesota State University and Bachelor of Arts in social sciences from Saint John's.  Orts was a four-year letterwinner and team captain as a senior under the direction of Hall of Famer and college football's all-time winningest coach John Gagliardi.  He was three-time MIAC Champion and made four Division III playoff appearances.

Orts and his wife Anna have two children, John (4) and Aubrey (2).
