Today's Contest
Today is the final game of a three-game season opening road trip and the second Ohio Athletic Conference game for the Baldwin Wallace University football team as it travels to University Heights for the 34th Battle for the Cuyahoga Gold Bowl Trophy against crosstown rival John Carroll University. Last week, BW picked up its first  win of the season as it defeated Wilmington College by a final score of 13-12. John Carroll was off last week but it opened the season on September 3 with a 36-25 loss to Washington and Jefferson (Pa.) College.

The Series
BW and John Carroll and Blue Streaks have met 62 times on the gridiron. The Blue Streaks lead the all-time series 32-25-4.  The series began in 1923 when John Carroll defeated BW, 19-13. Three notable names who have taken part in this series, BW graduate and College Football Hall of Famers Lee Tressel '48 and Jim Tressel '75 and John Carroll grad and Pro Football Hall of Famer Don Shula.

Cuyahoga Gold Bowl Trophy Series
John Carroll leads the Cuyahoga Gold Bowl Trophy series by a margin of 20-13, including winning nine straight. The last Yellow Jacket victory came in the 2012 season when BW posted a 32-28 victory in University Heights. The Yellow Jackets scored 15 points in the final nine minutes to rally for the victory. 

BW Head Coach Jim Hilvert 
Hilvert is in his sixth season at BW and has a record of  30-14 and OAC slate of 24-13. He is 97-39 in his 14th overall season and is 0-5 against John Carroll. 

John Carroll Interim Head Coach Drew Nystrom
Nystrom is in his first season as the interim head coach at John Carroll and has a record of 0-1 and an OAC mark of 0-0.  He is 0-0 vs. Baldwin Wallace.  

Last Game vs. JCU -- November 13,  2022
BW scored 28 points on 134 yards passing and 128 yards rushing, and 312  total yards.  John Carroll scored 29 points on 281 yards passing, 73 yards rushing and 354 total yards. 

Scouting the Yellow Jackets
In week two of the season, BW scored 13 points on 173 yards rushing and 57 yards passing for a 220 yards of total offense. Wilmington scored 12 points on 187 yards passing and 28 yards rushing for 215 yards of total offense.

BW Leaders
Offensively, junior quarterback Joey Marousek (North Royalton) has completed 12 of 27  passes for 157 yards with one touchdown.  Junior All-OAC running back Jon Murray, Jr. (Cincinnati/Withrow) leads the OAC and is 10th in NCAA Division III with 273 yards on 46 carries.  Murray, Jr. is also tied for first in the OAC with two rushing touchdowns. Senior wideout Elijah Arnett (Akron/Woodridge) leads the receiving corps with 57 yards on four catches/ Defensively, senior linebacker Mason Levasseur (Panama City, Fla. / South Walton)  tops the team and is tied for first in the OAC with 21 tackles.

Scouting the Blue Streaks
In week one of the season, John Carroll scored 26 points on 291 yards passing, 140 yards rushing and 431 total yards. Washington & Jefferson scored 35 points on 358 yards passing, 68 yards rushing and 426 total yards. 

John Carroll Leaders
Offensively, senior quarterback Joe Collins has completed 19 of 36 passes for 291 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. Sophomore running back Evan McVay leads the ground game as he has rushed for 86 yards on 12 carries with a touchdown.  Senior wide out Joe Torok leads the aerial attack with five catches for 78 yards. Defensively, senior defensive back Josh McLean leads the squad with nine stops/

Rushing Towards Records
Murray, Jr. is rushing his way into the record books at BW.  The All-OAC running back is already the all-time leading rusher with 2,892 yards and carries with 579.  Murray, Jr. needs three touchdowns to set the career touchdown record of 40.

Parents and Family Game
The OAC home opener on September 24 against Ohio Northern University will be part of the BW Parents' and Family Weekend in which all parents, guardians, siblings and family members of current BW students can experience a fun-filled BW weekend.  

Athletics Roadshow
Every Monday night at 7:30 p.m. the Department of Athletics hosts the Athletics Roadshow live from Mike's Bar and Grill in Downtown Berea.  Each week the show which airs on bwyellowjackets.com will recap and preview Yellow Jacket events as well as interview coaches and student-athletes.

Champions Day
The Athletic Department will honor its 2021-22 OAC Champions and NCAA successes at halftime of the September 24 game vs. Ohio Northern.  A student-athlete from Yellow Jacket baseball, men's lacrosse, women's basketball and wrestling will serve as a honorary captain.
