Football Falls to Crosstown Rival John Carroll in 34th Gold Bowl Trophy Game

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University football team fell to crosstown rival John Carroll University in an Ohio Athletic Conference and 34th Battle for the Cuyahoga Gold Bowl Trophy game by a final score of 21-7 on Wasmer Field inside Don Shula Stadium.

BW (1-2, 1-1 OAC) falls to 25-33-4 in the all-time series with John Carroll (1-1, 1-0 OAC).  The Yellow Jackets drops to 13-21 in the all-time Cuyahoga Gold Bowl Trophy series, including slipping in the last 10 games.

Offensively for BW, junior quarterback Joey Marousek (North Royalton) completed 18-of-30 passes for 201 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Senior quarterback Reese Wamer (Oregon/Clay) led the rushing attack with 34 yards on six carries. Senior All-OAC running back Jon Murray, Jr. (Cincinnati/Withrow) rushed for 27 yards on 10 carries. Murray, Jr now has 3,006 career rushing yards. Senior wide receiver Elijah Arnett (Akron/Woodridge) led the aerial assault with seven catches for 79 yards. Defensively, senior linebacker Mason Levasseur (Panama City, Fla./South Walton) recorded a game-high 12 tackles. 

Offensively for the Blue Streaks, senior quarterback Joe Collins completed 13-of-21 passes for 157 yards with one touchdown.  Sophomore running back Evan McVay led the ground game with 101 yards on 21 carries with one touchdown.  Senior tight end Tadas Taraunas led the receiving corps with four catches for 38 yards and one touchdown.   Defensively, junior linebacker Tyler Thimons tallied 10 stops.

  • 8:02     McVay 6-yard run (Volas kick is good)

4th Quarter (JCU, 21-7)

  • 2:17     JonMarcus Roland 48-yard interception return (Volas kick is good)
  • 1:56     Sophomore wide receiver Mikel Love (Fort Pierce, Fla./Westwood) 64-yard pass from Marousek (Senior kicker Dean Sarris (Canton/GlenOak good)
