Today's Contest
Today is the first game of the 2022 season and the lone non-conference game for Baldwin Wallace University football team as it travels to Cincinnati to take on Mount St. Joseph University. BW closed out the 2021 fall campaign with a 29-28 loss to crosstown rival John Carroll University. Mount St. Joseph ended their 2021 season with a 58-21 loss to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.).

The Series
BW and Mount St. Joseph are meeting for the first time on the gridiron.

BW Head Coach Jim Hilvert
Hilvert is in his sixth season at BW and has a record of  29-13 and Ohio Athletic Conference slate of 23-13. He is 96-39 in his 14th overall season.   Hilvert is 6-1 against Mount St. Joseph, including winning the last six contests. He is 9-4 in season openers, including a 4-1 record at BW.  Hilvert's only loss at BW in season opener was during the COVID-19 shortened season of spring 2021.

Mount St. Joseph Head Coach Tyler Hopperton
Hopperton is in his sixth season as head coach and his 11th overall at Mount St. Joseph and has a record of 32-14 and Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference mark of 27-9. 

Scouting the Yellow Jackets
BW finished the 2021 season with an overall record of 8-2 and finished tied for second in the OAC with a mark of 7-2. The Yellow Jackets averaged 32.3 points-per-game on 241.1 yards rushing and 129.2 yards passing for 370.3 yards of total offense. 

BW Leaders
Offensively, senior quarterback Reese Wamer (Oregon/Clay) returns as the lone signal caller that saw action in 2021.  Wamer completed 11-of-21 passes for 69 yards with one touchdown. Senior All-OAC running back Jon Murray, Jr. (Cincinnati/Withrow) returns to lead the ground attack after rushing for a career-high 1,121 yards on a career-best 216 carries.  Murray, Jr. was second in the OAC with a career-high 17 touchdowns and was second in yards. Senior wideout Darius Stokes (Canton/GlenOak) returns for his final season after leading the receiving corps with a career-best 34 catches for a career-high 572 with a career-best six touchdowns.  Defensively, BW returns four of its top tacklers from a season ago.  Senior linebacker Mason Levasseur(Panama City, Fla./South Walton) was second a season ago with a career-best 64 tackles while junior linebacker Dillon O'Donoghue (Canonsburg, Pa./Cannon-McMillian) finished third with a career-high stops.  Senior safety Jake Hill (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch and senior All-OAC Robbie Williamson (Columbus/Beechcroft) ranked fifth and sixth in tackles with 31 and 29 respectively.  Senior All-OAC placekicker Dean Sarris (Canton/GlenOak) returns to handle the kicking duties for the fourth straight season.  Sarris has converted 83-of-86 extra points and 15-of-24 field goals.

Scouting the Lions
Mount St. Joseph ended the 2021 campaign with an overall record of 6-4 and a mark of 5-2 in the HCAC.  The Lions averaged 27.6 points-per-game, 205.8 yards passing and 164.5 yards rushing or 370.3 yards of total offense. 

Mount St. Joseph Leaders
Offensively, junior quarterback Josh Taylor, who saw action in only six games, returns after completing 93-of-167 passes for 1,201 yards with 14 touchdowns and six interceptions.  Taylor also returns as the team leader in rushing after rushing for 571 yards on 115 carries with four touchdowns. Senior running back Mariano McKenzie was second a season ago with 524 yards on 122 carries with three touchdowns.  Senior Austin Brock leads the receiving corps after catching 40 passes for 633 yards with four touchdowns.  Defensively, junior linebacker Anthony Wright returns as the top tackler after finishing third on the team last season with 58 stops.

Jackets & Lions Ranked Second in Polls
BW and Mount St. Joseph find themselves in similar positions entering the 2022 season.  The Yellow Jackets and Lions were selected second in the respective conference preseason coaches polls after both finish second in 2021.

Going Back to Nati
Today's game will be a homecoming of sorts for four members of the Yellow Jackets. Head Coach Jim Hilvert and seniors Jon Murray, Jr. (Withrow) and Devon Slocum (Elder) and junior Dee Baylor (Indian Hill) all return to the Queen City.  Hilvert returns for the first time since 2016 when he won his second consecutive Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II State Championship with La Salle.  He comes back to Mount St. Joseph, a place where he served as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator, for the first time since the 2013 season when he won a 59-13 decision as the head coach at Thomas More (Ky.) University.  Murray, Jr., Slocum and Baylor will play their first collegiate games in their hometown.

Rushing Towards Records
Murray, Jr. is rushing his way into the record books at BW.  The senior All-OAC running back is already the all-time leading rusher with 2,715 yards.  Murray, Jr. needs five touchdowns to set the career touchdown record of 40 and needs 18 carries to set the record with 571

Parents and Family Game
The OAC home opener on September 24 against Ohio Northern University will be part of the BW Parents' and Family Weekend in which all parents, guardians, siblings and family members of current BW students can experience a fun-filled BW weekend.
