BW Women Capture Cleveland College Championships

BEREA, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University women's indoor track and field team finished first tonight at the annual Cleveland Colleges Championship Meet on the Harrison Dillard Track in the Lou Higgins Center. The meet consisted of four NCAA Division III schools and two NCAA Division II schools. 

The BW women were first of six teams with 222.50 points and had nine champions. The title was the third this winter for the women

The Yellow Jacket women were led by freshman Melanie Winters (Stow) who was a double winner as she placed first in the long jump with a leap of 17'10.25", second in the high jump with a jump of 5'5", second in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.38 seconds and was a member of the winning 4 x 200-meter relay team.  Junior sprinter Nicole Smith (Geneva) won twice as she earned titles in the 200 and 400-meter dashes and anchored the winning 4 x 400-meter relay team. She won the 200 meters in 26.75 seconds and the 400 meters in 59.53 seconds.

Joining Winters on the winning 4 x 200 meter relay team were senior Lauren Nanni (Parma/Padua Franciscan), junior Sheuquella Greeno (Lima), and senior Kaylan Lemon (Canton/Massillon Perry) who finished first in a time of 1:46.76. Lemon also won the 55-meter dash in 7.47 seconds and took second in the 200-meter in 26.94 seconds.  Nanni was third in the 200-meter as she crossed the finish in 27.57 seconds. Freshman Ashley Wakut (Seven Hills) placed second in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:01.52.   

In the 55-meter hurdles and in addition to Winters , senior Courtney Kiner (Sunbury/Ashland) took third finishing in a time of 8.88 seconds.  Junior Brooke Hradisky (Aurora) finished second in the 800-meter in a time of 2:23.29 and freshman Taylor Jurczynski (Parma) was third as she crossed the finish at 2:25.73.

In the 3000-meter run, junior Lauren Hutka (North Ridgeville/ Midview) placed second in a time of 11:42.65 and junior Blair Vrcan (Mentor) took third in a time of 11:46.86.

The 4x400 meter relay, the team consisting of freshman Sam Lang (Akron/Green), Wakut, Hradisky, and Nicole Smith finished first in a time of 4:03.97.

In addition to Winters in the field events, junior Victoria Brown (Berlin Center/Western Reserve) finished first in the high jump with a winning leap of 5'6", freshman Kim Gallavan (Auburn Township) won the weight throw with a toss of 44'5.25"  and freshman Maggie Urban (Cleveland) placed second with a toss of 42'10.25". Senior Stephanie Shockley (Tiffin/ Columbian) placed second in the pole vault with a mark of 8'11.75" and freshman Savannah Moore (Burbank/Northwestern) finished second in the shot put with a throw of 36' 5.50".


Tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 16, select Yellow Jacket individuals will compete at the Kent State University Open Meet at 11:00 a.m.
