Yellow Jacket Women's Tennis Team Opens Spring Trip in Hilton Head, S.C. with 7-2 Win versus Marian

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team opened its annual Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina on Sunday, March 7 with a 7-2 victory against Marian College of Indiana.


The Yellow Jackets, who play six matches in four days in Hilton Head, are seeking to win their third Ohio Athletic Conference title and earn their third NCAA Division III National Tournament berth in the last four seasons.

The Yellow Jackets, now 1-3 overall, built a 2-1 lead in doubles play as the number one duo of junior Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/ Columbus Bishop Hartley) and freshman Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/ Catholic) defeated the Marian duo, 8-5, and the No.3 tandem of senior Andrea Essig (Conneaut/ Ashtabula Edgewood) and junior Katy Marshall (Medina/ Senior) won over its opponents, 8-5.

BW also won five-of-six singles matches to put the match away as Greene won at No.2, Mittler won at No.3, junior Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/ Green) won at No.4, Essig won at No.5 and Marshall at No.6. Greene, Mittler and Pelosi all won in straight sets and both Essig and Marshall won in a third-set super tie-breakers and both by a 10-6 count.

With its loss, Marian is now 11-3 overall, but this was its first spring match after compiling an 11-2 slate during the fall 2009 portion of its schedule.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action tomorrow, Monday, March 8 when they play NCAA Division II the University of Charleston (S.C.) at 8:00 a.m. and then play nationally-ranked Washington (Mo.) University at 6:00 p.m.

The first spring northern matches will take place on Saturday, March 20 when BW hosts a doubleheader against NCAA Division II Ashland University at 11:00 a.m. and Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College at 3:00 p.m. All matches are played on the "Pop" Collins Courts ion the BW campus.
