BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team opened its 2010 spring season with a 5-4 loss today (Saturday, February 13) at traditional rival Oberlin College inside the John W. Heisman Fieldhouse in Oberlin. The Yellow Jackets play another indoor match on Feb. 20 at Kenyon College in Gambier before departing for their annual Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina on March 5.
Despite the loss to the Yeowomen, the 0-2 Yellow Jackets were led by junior fourth singles and second doubles player Emily Pelosi (Unionrown/ Green), as she won in both singles and doubles. At fourth singles, she dispatched Oberlin's Liz Saltzman in two sets at 6-1 and 6-1. Pelosi also teammed with sophomore Jenny Greene (Worthington/ Thomas Worthington) to win 8-1 at second doubles.
In addition to Pelosi in singles play, freshman Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/ Catholic) won at No.3 by the scores of 6-3 and 6-4, and junior Katy Marshall (Medina/ Senior) won at No.6 by scores of 6-3 and 6-4.
On its annual spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C., BW plays six matches with the first coming against Marian (Wisc.) College at 3:00 p.m. The first spring northern matches will take place on Saturday, March 20 when BW hosts a doubleheader against NCAA Division II Ashland University at 11:00 a.m. and then versus Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College at 3:00 p.m. All matches are played on the "Pop" Collins Courts on the BW campus.
