BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team lost to NCAA Division II Brevard (N.C.) College, 9-0, in its final match today (Wednesday, March 10, 2010) of its annual Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina. The Yellow Jackets return to Berea with a 3-6 overall record against one of the most difficult season-opening schedules in its history.
Brevard won all three doubles matches by a combined score of 24-7, and the Tornadoes captured all six singles matches with just junior number six player Katy Marshall (Medina/ Senior) extending her match to a super tie-breaker before losing. The win was Brevard's sixth straight and improved its season slate to 6-2 overall.
To date, junior No.4 player Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/ Green) tops all singles players with a 7-4 record and Marshall is second at 6-5. In doubles play, the No.2 duo of Pelosi and sophomore Jenny Greene (Worthington/ Thomas Worthington) have the best mark at 5-7.
"Yes, we played a very difficult spring trip schedule and I felt the women played well, competed against some very tough opponents and prepared themselves for the northern and Ohio Athletic Conference schedule," said veteran Head Coach Jack Bethlenfalvy. "This was a great way for us to prepare to make a run at another OAC title and spot in the NCAA Division III National Tournament."
To date, BW has played against four NCAA Division II teams and two ranked Division III squads.
The first spring northern matches will take place on Saturday, March 20 when BW hosts a doubleheader against NCAA Division II Ashland University at 11:00 a.m. and then versus Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College at 3:00 p.m. All matches are played at the "Pop" Collins Courts on the BW campus.
