Baldwin Wallace Falls to Calvin (Mich.), 5-0, in NCAA Tournament First Round

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team lost to Calvin (Mich.) College, 5-0, today (Thursday, May 13, 2010) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament at the Hyde Park Bally's Tennis Courts in Chicago, Illinois. This was the third NCAA Tournament appearance for the Yellow Jackets in the last four years.


The loss ends BW's school-record 15-match winning streak and the Yellow Jackets end the season at 18-8 overall. Calvin, ranked 10th in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, improves to 18-3 overall. The Knights advance to the tomorrow's second round against #21-nationally ranked Washington (Mo.) University.

The Knights took a 3-0 after doubles play. At No.1, the duo of junior Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/Columbus Bishop Hartley) and freshman Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/Catholic) fought hard but were defeated, 8-5, by Calvin's Melissa Oosterhouse and Kaitlin Spoelhof. At No. 2, junior Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/Green) and sophomore Jenny Greene (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) fell, 8-2, and at No. 3, senior Andrea Essig (Ashtabula/Edgewood) and junior Katy Marshall (Medina/Senior) lost, 8-3.

Pecinovsky and Mittler finished the season at 15-13 overall, Essig and Marshall were 14-11, and Greene and Pelosi were 13-11.

In singles play, Pecinovsky was defeated 6-3, 6-3 at No.1 by Oosterhouse, who entered the match ranked 10th in the ITA Central Region in singles.  Essig then fell in straight sets at No. 5 to complete the match.

For the season, Pelosi led the team in singles play with an 18-5 record at No.4. Marshall was 18-7 at No.6, Mittler was 15-9 at No. 3, Pecinovsky was 15-10 at No. 1, Greene was 12-12 at No. 2 and Essig was 10-15 at No. 5.

In the last four years, BW has an outstanding combined record of 74-29 and has won three of the last four Ohio Athletic Conference championships.
