BEREA, OHIO -- The top-seeded Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team defeated rival and fourth-seeded John Carroll University, 5-0, today (Friday, May 7, 2010) in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. The Yellow Jackets have now won a school-record 14 matches in a row and advance to the OAC Championship match versus Otterbein College tomorrow morning.
With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 17-7 overall and look for their third OAC Title in four years versus Otterbein College at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The winner of the match earns an automatic berth to the Division III National Championship Tournament. Otterbein defeated Mount Union College, 5-1, in the other OAC semifinal match today. BW defeated Otterbein, 5-4, in their regular season matchup last month in Berea.
BW took a 3-0 lead after three hard-fought doubles matches. The number one duo of junior Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/Columbus Bishop Hartley) and freshman Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/Catholic) won, 9-8 with a 7-2 tie-breaker; the No.2 tandem of this week's OAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week, junior Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/Green) and sophomore Jenny Greene (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) won 9-7; and the No. 3 team of last week's OAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week, junior Katy Marshall (Medina/Senior) and senior Andrea Essig (Ashtabula/ Edgewood) won, 9-8 with an 8-6 tie-breaker.
In singles play, BW won two matches in straight sets to clinch the victory. Pelosi won 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 4 to improve to a team-best 18-4 overall and Marshall won 6-0 and 6-1 at No. 6 to improve to 18-6.
