Yellow Jackets Clinch Outright OAC Regular Season Championship versus Wilmington, 9-0

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team clinched the outright Ohio Athletic Conference regular season championship with a dominating, 9-0 victory versus OAC foe Wilmington College today (Sunday, May 2, 2010) inside the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse in Berea.

The OAC regular season title is the third in the last four years for the Yellow Jackets and veteran Head Coach Jack Bethlenfalvy (26 years and an OAC-record 292 career wins and 292-190 career record).  BW also won its 12th straight match dating back to March 20.  During its 12-match winning streak, BW has outscored its opponents, 93-15, including seven shutouts.

This match was originally scheduled to be played at Wilmington on Saturday, April 24, but postponed due to bad weather that day.  Since Wilmington played yesterday at OAC foe John Carroll University, the two coaches decided to play the match in Berea.

With their victory, the Yellow Jackets are now 15-7 overall and end the OAC regular season with a perfect 9-0 record. This also marks BW's third unbeaten OAC mark in the last four years and ran its four-year mark to 35-1. With its loss, Wilmington is now 6-9 overall and ends the OAC regular season at 5-4.

The Yellow Jackets dominated the match from start-to-finish as they won 24 of a possible 31 games in doubles and 64 of a possible 76 games in singles for a combined 88 of 107 games overall.

BW took a 3-0 lead in doubles play as the number one duo of junior Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/Columbus Bishop Hartley) and freshman Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/Catholic) won, 8-0; the No.2 tandem of junior Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/Green) and sophomore Jenny Greene (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) won 8-2; and the No. 3 team of junior Katy Marshall (Medina/Senior) and senior Andrea Essig (Conneaut/Ashtabula Edgewood) won, 8-5.  With their win at No.3, Essig and Marshall are now 12-9 overall, Pecinovsky and Mittler are 12-12 overall and Pelosi and Greene are 10-10 overall

In singles play, BW won all six matches in straight sets to clinch the victory and the outright OAC title.  Pecinovsky won at No. 1, Greene at No. 2, Mittler at No. 3, Pelosi at No. 4, Marshall at No. 5, and Marshall at No. 6. In exhibition doubles play, the tandem of senior Alisha Shivers (East Liverpool) and freshman Anna Callahan (Williamsville, N.Y./Clarence Central) won, 6-0.

The 2010 OAC Tournament begins on Wednesday, May 5 when BW hosts a first round match against either Marietta College (3-9 overall and 2-7 in the OAC) or Heidelberg University (4-11, 2-6 OAC). Heidelberg hosts Capital University this morning in Tiffin at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday's quarterfinal match is at 3:30 p.m. at the "Pop" Collins Courts in Berea.

The OAC Final Four is on Friday and Saturday, May 7-8, at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. The winner of the OAC Tournament receives the OAC's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
