Yellow Jackets Defeat OAC Rival John Carroll, 7-2 and DII Lake Erie, 9-0

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 7-2, and beat non-league foe NCAA Division II Lake Erie College, 9-0, today (Saturday, April 10) at Purvis Park in University Heights. BW has now won six matches in a row.


With its win, BW improves to 9-7 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the OAC, while JCU fell to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the OAC. Lake Erie is now 0-6 overall.

Against John Carroll, the Yellow Jackets took a 2-1 lead in doubles the number one duo of junior Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/ Bishop Hartley) and freshman Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/ Elyria Catholic) won 8-5, and the No.3 team of junior Katy Marshall (Medina/ Senior) and senior Andrea Essig (Conneaut/ Ashtabula Edgewood) also won 8-2.  

In singles play, BW won five of six matches. At No.1, Pecinovsky won, 6-2 and 6-3, sophomore No.2 player Jenny Greene (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) won, 6-2 and 6-1, junior No.4 Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/Green) won, 6-1 and 6-1, No.5 Essig won, 6-4 and 7-6 (7-2), and No.6 Marshall won, 6-2 and 6-2.  
Against Lake Erie, BW took a 3-0 lead in doubles play as the No.1 duo of junior Nicole Fung (Strongsville) and senior Alisha Shivers (East Liverpool) won, 8-6, the No.2 tandem of freshman Danielle Rueger (Ashland/ Senior) and freshman Anna Callahan (Williamsville, N.Y./ Clarence Central) won, 8-0, and the Jackets received a forfeit at No.3 as Lake Erie on had four players today and five on its roster.

In singles play, BW captured all four matches and received two forfeits. Rueger won at first singles, 6-4 and 6-0; Fung won at No.2, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-2 pro-set); Shivers won at No.3, 6-1 and 6-2; and Callahan won at No.4, 6-1 and 6-4.

The BW women next play a home match on Wednesday, April 14 when it hosts OAC arch-rival Mount Union College at the "Pop" Collins Courts in Berea at 3:30 p.m. BW also hosts defending OAC champ Ohio Northern University next Saturday, April 17 on the Collins Courts at 12:00 noon.
