BW Women's Tennis Beats Marietta, 5-0, in OAC Quarterfinal and Ties Record With 13 Straight Wins

BEREA, OHIO -- The top-seeded Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team defeated eighth-seeded Marietta College, 5-0, today (Tuesday, May 4, 2010) in a record-tying performance in an Ohio Athletic Conference quarterfinal match on the "Pop" Collins Courts in Berea.


The victory both advanced the No.1-seed Yellow Jackets into the OAC Final Four this Friday and Saturday, May 7-8 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio and gave BW its school-record-tying13th straight victory. BW set the previous 13-game record during its 25-3 season in 2006-06. During its 13-match winning streak, BW has outscored its opponents, 98-15, including eight shutouts.

With their victory, the Yellow Jackets are now 16-7 overall and play the winner of No.4-seeded John Carroll University versus 5th-seeded Ohio Northern University in a semifinal match on Friday at 1:00 p.m. The OAC Championship match is on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with the winner receiving the OAC's automatic berth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. BW has won two of the last three OAC Tournament titles and has a 41-2 mark against OAC teams during that span, including a 10-0 mark this season.  With its loss, Marietta ends its season at 3-10 overall.

The Yellow Jackets dominated the match from start-to-finish as they won 24 of a possible 26 points in doubles and 12 of a possible 12 points in two completed singles matches for a combined 36 of 38 points overall.

BW took a 3-0 lead in doubles play as the number one duo of junior Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/Columbus Bishop Hartley) and freshman Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/Catholic) won, 8-1; the No.2 tandem of this week's OAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week, junior Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/Green) and sophomore Jenny Greene (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) won 8-0; and the No. 3 team of last week's OAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week, junior Katy Marshall (Medina/Senior) and senior Andrea Essig (Ashtabula/ Edgewood) won, 8-1.  

With their win at No.3, Essig and Marshall are now 13-9 overall, Pecinovsky and Mittler are 13-12 overall and Pelosi and Greene are 11-10 overall

In singles play, BW won two matches in straight sets to clinch the victory.  Pecinovsky won 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 1 and Marshall won 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 6.  With their wins, Pecinovsky is now 14-9 overall and Marshall is 17-6. In addition, Greene has an 11-12 mark at No.2, Mittler is 14-9 at No.3, Pelosi is tied with Marshall for the most singles wins with 17 and is 17-4 at No.4 and Essig is 10-13 at No.5.
