Women’s Golf Team Defends OAC Title

Final Tournament Results

LOCKBOURNE, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's golf team carded a second round of 348 strokes today (Sunday, April 29) to finish first and defend its title at the 2012 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at the Foxfire Golf Club in Lockbourne (Greater Columbus). That means the Yellow Jackets will make a second straight appearance at the NCAA Division III National Tournament which will be held at Trine University in Angola, Indiana from May 8-11.

The title is B-W's fourth since the OAC began sponsoring a women's golf championship in 2000.  B-W won titles in 2000, 2001, last season and this year.

"The ladies played outstanding golf and I am so proud of them," said Head Coach Alyson Campbell, the 2011 OAC Coach of the Year. "We had a good first day and pretty much maintained our lead during the second day.

"I am very excited for our ladies to return to the NCAA Division III National Tournament," continued Campbell. "Last year was a great learning experience. This time we won't just be happy to be there. This time we will want to perform better."

The Yellow Jackets carded rounds of 345 strokes on Saturday and 348 today for a two-day and 36-hole total of 693 strokes on the par-72 and 5,861-yard Foxfire G.C. layout. Otterbein University was second with 703 strokes and the University of Mount Union third at 709.

In team play (each team has five golfers and the top four scores count toward the team total), the Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore Emilee Woolf (Ravenna) as she carded rounds of 80 and 86 for a 166-stroke total to place second individually. Her 80 on the first day was the low round.

"Emilee led the way and had a great first day," said Campbell. "But look at today. Only two shots separated all five players. That was strong consistency. We'll need to step it up a bit and have that same consistency at the national tourney. I am so proud of these ladies."

Woolf was joined as an All-OAC selection by juniors Rebecca Kapusta (Independence) and Brooke Hamilton (Cleveland/ St. Joseph Academy), who each fired rounds of 86 and 88 for a 174-stroke total; sophomore Miranda Cunningham (Dayton/ Dayton Christian), who had rounds of 91 and 87 for a 176-stroke total; sophomore Rebecca Jones (Hilliard/ Darby), who had rounds of 103 and 87 for a 190-stroke total.

Woolf and Cunningham were first-team All-OAC selections, Kapusta and Hamilton made the second-team and Jones was an honorable mention choice.  A year ago, Woolf made the first-team, Cunningham, Kapusta and Hamilton the second-team and Jones honorable mention.

The winner of the OAC Championship Tournament receives the OAC's automatic berth in the 2012 NCAA Division III National Tournament.

A year ago, the B-W women's golf team fashioned an 83-18 overall record, won five tournament titles, including the 2011 OAC title, and placed 15th at the NCAA Division III National Tournament.  The Yellow Jackets have advanced to the Division III National Tournament three times during its 12-year existence.
