Men’s Tennis Earns ITA All-Academic Team and Scholar Athlete Honors

TEMPE, ARIZ. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team has been honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as a Division III All-Academic Team and 10 members have been recognized as Scholar Athletes.

To be honored as an All-Academic Team, the program must have a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale) and all varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA. In order to earn Scholar-Athlete status, a player must be a varsity letter winner, with a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year and have been enrolled at the school for at least two semesters.

BW, who was the lone Ohio Athletic Conference team to be honored, finished the 2015-16 academic year with a team grade point average of 3.82.   The Yellow Jackets were tied for fourth among of 135 teams in the nation with 10 scholar athlete accolades.  The University of Chicago topped the list with 15 and Johns Hopkins University and Haverford College were tied for second with 11 selections.

"I am extremely proud of the tremendous effort put forth academically and athletically by the men's tennis team this year," said Veteran Head Coach Brian Rector '89.  "They impressed me with their commitment to the team and made sure no that nobody was left behind.  As a result, we continue our pattern of success in the classroom and on the court.  The Division III student-athlete philosophy is alive and well here at Baldwin Wallace University."

The 10 student-athletes honored by the ITA are 2016-17 seniors Brian Carano (Akron/Revere),Nathan Katz (Upper Arlington/Bexley) and Jake Liebler (Medina) and sophomores Dominic Polifrone (Hudson) and Matt Harris (Akron/Revere) along with 2016 graduates Kevin Fredrick (Archbold), Doug Ganim (Westerville/Olentangy Orange), Peter Harris (Akron/Revere) and Kyle Patterson (Wooster/Triway) and 2016 junior Brandon Caynor (Norton).

BW finished the 2015-16 season with a record of 24-5 and a second place finish in the OAC with a mark of 7-1.
