Men’s Tennis Earns Split on Day Three of Spring Break Trip

HILTON HEAD, South Carolina – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis split a pair of non-conference matches on the third of four days of competition during its annual spring break trip.

BW (11-1) opened the day with a 9-0 victory against Nazareth (N.Y.) College.   The Yellow Jackets closed out their third day with a hard fought 5-4 defeat to  Wilkes (Pa.) College.

Against Nazareth, BW took the early 3-0 lead after doubles play.  Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC player Kyle Patterson (Wooster/Triway) and freshman Dominic Polifrone (Hudson) won at first doubles by a score of 8-2.  Juniors Nathan Katz (Upper Arlington/Bexley) and Jake Liebler (Medina) captured second doubles by a score of 8-5.  Juniors Brian Carano (Akron/Revere) and Brandon Caynor (Norton) won at third doubles by a score of 8-4.

In singles play, the Yellow Jackets won all six matches to secure the victory.  Patterson won at number one by scores of 6-0 and 6-1.  Polifrone took second singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-0.  Katz secured number three by scores of 6-2 and 6-1.  Freshman Matt Harris (Akron/Revere) won number four singles by scores of 6-4 and 6-3.  Senior Kevin Fredrick (Archbold) took fifth singles by scores of 6-1 and 6-0.  Carano secured sixth singles by identical scores of 6-0.

Against Wilkes, BW trailed 3-0 after doubles action.

In singles action, the Yellow Jackets won four of six matches. Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC player Peter Harris (Akron/Revere) won his match at first singles by scores of 6-4 and 6-3.  Patterson took third singles by scores of 6-3 and 7-5.  Polifrone captured fourth singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-2.  Katz earned a victory at fifth singles by scores of 6-4 and 6-3.

BW closes out its spring break trip on Wednesday, March 9 with a pair of non-conference matches against Gordon (Mass.) College and Bridgewater (Va.) College.  The Gordon match is scheduled to begin at 8 am and the Bridgewater match is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start.
