Men’s Tennis Wins Two Shutout Matches to Open Spring Break Trip

HILTON HEAD, South Carolina – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis opened its annual spring break trip with a pair of non-conference shutout victories.

BW (8-0) opened the day with a 9-0 shutout victory against Arcadia (Pa.) College.   The Yellow Jackets closed out the day with a 9-0 victory against Roanoke (Va.) College.

Against Arcadia, BW gained a 3-0 advantage after doubles plays.  Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC player Peter Harris (Akron/ Richfield Revere), who was the 2015 OAC Player of the Year, and senior All-OAC player Doug Ganim (Westerville/ Olentangy Orange) won at first doubles by a score of 8-1.  Senior All-OAC player Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) and freshman Dominic Polifrone (Hudson), last week's Ohio Athletioc Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, won at second doubles by a score of 8-2.  Senior Kevin Fredrick (Archbold) and freshman Matt Harris (Akron/ Richfield Revere) won at third doubles by a score of 8-1.

In singles play, the Yellow Jackets won all six matches to complete the shutout. Peter Harris won at first singles by identical scores of 6-0.  Ganim took second singles by scores of 6-2 and 6-0.  Patterson won at third singles by scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Polifrone captured fourth singles by scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Junior Brian Carano (Akron/ Richfield Revere) took fifth singles by scores of 6-0 and 6-3. Junior Brandon Caynor (Norton) won sixth singles by identical scores of 6-1.

Against Roanoke, BW won all three matches.  Peter Harris and Ganim earned a win at first doubles by a score of 8-2. The duo, who have played doubles together all four years, improved to 10-2 this season and 75-20 in their careers to rank in a tie for fifth on the school's all-time victory list. Patterson and Polifrone took second doubles by a score of 8-0 to earn their team-best 12th win this season and improve to 12-2 overall. In addition, the doubles win for Patterson was his 73rd and ranks him tied for eighth all-time. Fredrick and Matt Harris won third doubles by a score of 8-5.

In singles action, the Yellow Jackets completed the doubleheader shutout sweep by winning all six matches.

Peter Harris
took first singles by identical scores of 6-1. His two wins today give him a team-best 13 this season with a 13-3 mark. The wins also improved his career record to 77-17 and moved him into sixth place on the school's all-time singles win list. Ganim earned a second singles victory by scores of 6-3 and 6-4 to improve to 10-1 this season. His wins give him 71 in his career with a 71-16 career slate and ranks 11th all-time  Patterson captured third singles by scores of 6-1 and 6-0. His two wins today give Patterson a perfect 9-0 record this season and 74 wins in his career with a 74-16 mark to rank ninth all-time.

Polifrone
took fourth singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-1 to improve to a perfect 10-0 this season. Junior Nathan Katz (Upper Arlington/ Bexley) won his only match of the day at number five by scores of 6-2 and 6-1 to improve to 9-0 this season. Junior Jake Liebler (Medina) also won his only match with a 6-2 and 6-0 victory at number six and is 7-2 this season.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Monday, March 7 when it continues play on its spring break trip with a non-conference doubleheader against Gettysburg (Pa.) College and Albion (Mich.) College.  The match against Gettysburg is at 8 a.m. and the Albion match is slated for an 11:45 a.m. start.
