Men’s Tennis Ends Successful Spring Trip With a 7-1 Record

HILTON HEAD, South Carolina – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team ended its annual spring break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina with a pair of non-conference victories. 

BW (13-1) opened the day with a 9-0 shutout victory against Gordon (Mass.) College and ended its trip with a 6-3 victory against Bridgewater (Va.) College.

Against Gordon, BW took the early 3-0 lead after doubles play.  Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC players Peter Harris (Akron/Revere) and Doug Ganim (Westerville/ Olentangy Orange) earned a victory at number one by a score of 8-4. Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC player Kyle Patterson (Wooster/Triway) and freshman Dominic Polifrone (Hudson) won 8-1 at No.2. The win for Patterson was the 76th of his career and moved him into seventh place on the school's all-time victory list for doubles. Senior Kevin Fredrick (Archbold) and freshman Matt Harris (Akron/Revere) captured No.3 doubles by a score of 8-2.

In singles play, the Yellow Jackets won all six matches to secure the victory. Peter Harris won at No.1 by scores of 6-2 and 6-3.  Fredrick won at No.2 by identical scores of 6-4.  Patterson won at No.3 by scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Polifrone earned a win at No.4 by identical scores of 6-1. Junior Nathan Katz (Upper Arlington/Bexley) won at No.5 singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-2. Junior Brian Carano (Akron/Revere) won at No.6 by scores of 6-2 and 6-1. Carano is 3-3 this season.

Against Bridgewater, BW won one of three doubles matches to trail 2-1 after doubles play. Peter Harris and Ganim picked up the lone win at No.1 by a score of 8-3. The duo, who have played doubles together all four years at BW, improved their season record to 14-3 and their career mark to 79-21 to rank fifth all-time. Despite losing at No.2 doubles and compiling a 1-1 mark for the day, Patterson and Polifrone are 15-5 this season.

The Yellow Jackets rallied to win five of six singles matches to secure the win.  Peter Harris won at first singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-2. He improved to 18-3 this season and 82-17 in his career and moved into fourth place all-time. He was the 2015 Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Ganim won at No.2 by scores of 6-3 and 6-0 to improve to 13-2 this season and 74-17 in his career to rank 10th all-time. Patterson won at third singles by scores of 6-0 and 6-1 to improve to a perfect 15-0 this season and 79-16 in his career to rank in a tie for sixth all-time. Polifrone, last week's OAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week, won at No.4 by scores of 6-1 and 7-5 and is now a perfect 16-0.  Katz secured at fifth singles by identical scores of 6-0 to improve to a perfect 15-0.

With a 13-1 record so far this season, veteran BW Head Coach Brian Rector '89 improved his career mark to an incredible 484-96 in 27 seasons at his alma mater.

BW is back in action on Thursday, March 17 when it travels to Washington, Pennsylvania for a non-conference match against Washington & Jefferson College at 3:30 p.m. The Yellow Jacket home and OAC-opener is on Friday, March 25 when they host the University of Mount Union on the Pop Collins Tennis Courts at 3 p.m.
