Women's Volleyball Splits on Day 1 of the Mount Union Invitational

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's volleyball team competed in day one of the Mount Union Invitational on Friday, September 3. The Yellow Jackets dropped the first match to Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) before bouncing back to win a five-set thriller against Geneseo University (N.Y.) to move to 2-1 overall on the year.

Match 1

The Yellow Jackets dropped the first two sets to the Tartans, 25-19 and 25-18. Surging back, BW dominated the second set 25-12, earning four service aces and hitting .294 as a team. Carnegie Mellon earned the win in the fourth set (25-19) to win the match and move to 2-0 overall.

BW was led by Cecelia Hamisch who totaled 11 kills, to match her past performance on Wednesday against Franciscan University. Nicole Logan posted 10 kills and hit .320 in the match. Ivy Earl earned a double-double, tallying 10 kills and 12 digs. Isa Luciano added six kills.

Setter Lauren Reid finished the match with 30 assists and two kills. Having a standout performance on defense was senior Morgan Martin who totaled 23 digs. Martin added three service aces. Also tallying double-digit digs was freshman transfer libero Lauren Gardner with 12 digs, who also posted three service aces for BW.

Match 2

BW started the second match swinging hard and tallying 13 kills in the first set. The Yellow Jackets won the first game (25-16) before dropping a tough second set (26-24) to the Knights. Splitting the next two sets 1-1, the Yellow Jackets and Knights found themselves in the tie-breaking fifth set. It was BW the rest of the way. The Yellow Jackets got off to a hot start, earning the quick 4-0 lead and later the 10-2 lead. BW earned the huge 15-7 victory to split the day. Geneseo drops to an 0-2 overall record.

Earl led BW offensively, totaling a remarkable 22 kills. Earl also tallied 19 digs and five service aces. Hamisch posted 15 kills while Reid finished with 42 assists, 11 digs, and four service aces. Martin had another impressive performance on the back line, totaling 22 digs (for a 45 total on the day). Gardner posted 19 digs and four service aces. Angela Dunn added 17 digs and Luciano tallied 11 kills.

The Yellow Jackets return to the court tomorrow morning, September 4, as BW faces The College at Brockport (N.Y.) at 10:00 a.m. and The College of Wooster at 2:00 p.m. in day 2 of the Mount Union Invitational.
