Women’s Volleyball Earns Four-Set Win in Season Opener at Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's volleyball team began their season on Wednesday, September 1 on the road at non-conference opponent Franciscan University in Finnegan Fieldhouse.

Despite dropping the first set 25-16 to the Barons, BW battled back to take the next three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-15, and 25-22. BW advances to 1-0 overall and Franciscan moves to 0-1. The Yellow Jackets hit .312 as a team in tonight's match and used all available players to earn the win.

The Yellow Jackets totaled 11 kills and hit .333 in the first set but accumulated six service errors and four hitting errors that hindered their play. BW found the momentum in the second set, with senior Angela Dunn (Fairview) serving 10 straight points to put the Yellow Jackets up 13-4 to start the set. The Yellow Jackets earned the win 25-14 and totaled 12 kills and five service aces, four being from Dunn.

BW had a standout third set performance, hitting .565 and totaling 14 kills. The Yellow Jackets and Barons went back and forth in the fourth set, tying the game 10 times. With BW leading 22-17, the Barons went on a 4-1 scoring run to close the gap to one, forcing BW to a timeout. The Yellow Jackets came out of the timeout rattling off the last two points to clinch the set 25-22 to win the match.

Cecelia Hamisch (Union/Northmont) led BW in kills, tallying 11. Also hitting double-digit kills was Ivy Earl (Howell, Mich.), who tallied 10 kills and hit .412. Isa Luciano (Willoughby/South) posted nine kills with only one error, hitting .615.

Lauren Reid (Canonsburg/Canon-McMillan) led the Yellow Jackets in assists and digs and posted a double-double, tallying 39 assists and 10 digs. Dunn added six service aces.

BW is back in action this Friday and Saturday (September 3rd and 4th) as the Yellow Jackets travel to the Mount Union Invitational. BW will take on Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) at 5:00 p.m. and Geneseo (N.Y.) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
