Women’s Volleyball Earns Victory at Hiram, 3-1

HIRAM, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's volleyball team traveled to Hiram, Ohio to face non-conference opponent Hiram College in Price Gymnasium. Despite falling in set two to the Terriers, BW earned the 3-1 victory over the Terriers by set scores of 25-19, 22-25, 25-21, and 25-16.

BW earned the quick jump on the Terriers by earning the set one victory by a 25-19 score, tallying 17 kills and hitting .279 as a team. Grabbing the 20-13 lead in the second set, the Terriers rallied back going on a 12-2 run to close the set (25-22).

With the match being tied 1-1, the Yellow Jackets and Terriers were tied 6-6 in the third set before Hiram earned a 10-6 advantage. Chipping away at the Terriers, BW tied the set at 14-14. The Yellow Jackets and Terriers shared over 10 ties, before BW earned the set three win (25-21). 

To start the fourth set, the Terriers and the Yellow Jackets were tied at five points apiece. BW then went on a 9-3 run to force a Hiram timeout (14-8). It was BW the rest of the way, earning the 25-16 win in set four and clinching the 3-1 victory over the Terriers. The win improves BW to a 10-3 overall record and extends its win streak to eight. The loss drops Hiram to an 8-6 overall record.

The Yellow Jackets outperformed Hiram on offense, posting 58 kills to Hiram's 38 total. BW also tallied 51 assists while the Terriers only notched 33. BW held the advantage in digs (92-85) and service aces (8-5).

BW was led by senior First Team All-OAC performer and Academic All-OAC outside hitter Ivy Earl (Howell, Mich.) who tallied 16 kills and a career-high 22 digs. Junior Academic All-OAC middle hitter Isa Luciano (Willoughby/South) posted 14 kills and hit .462. Freshman setter Lauren Reid (Canonsburg, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) finished with 48 assists, 14 digs, and four kills. 

Senior Academic All-OAC defensive specialist Morgan Martin (Seven Hills/Trinity) notched 15 digs and three service aces while freshman libero Lauren Gardner (Cleveland/Saint Joseph) added 21 digs for BW. Senior All-OAC performer and Academic All-OAC outside hitter Cecelia Hamisch (Union/Northmont) tallied 12 kills. Freshman middle hitter Alyssa Saghy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) added three kills and three total blocks.

The Yellow Jackets return to play Friday (September 24) and Saturday (September 25) as BW travels to Franklin, Indiana for the Franklin Invitational. The Yellow Jackets will face Trine University (Ind.) at 5:00 PM and Anderson University (Ind.) at 7:00 PM on Friday.
