Volleyball Opens Home Schedule with Victory over Penn State Behrend

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace women's volleyball team (14-1 overall) opened their home schedule with a non-conference matchup against the visiting lions of Penn St. –Behrend, at the Lou Higgins center, inside Ursprung Gymnasium.  

Leading the way offensively, with 10 digs for the Yellow Jackets, was sophomore middle hitter Taylor Brown (Maple Heights). The defense was supported by Greyhound Invitational All-Tournament selection, sophomore defensive specialist Sarah Reinhard (Willoughby/South), who tallied nine of BW's 34 digs.

Getting action started with a nine point service run was freshman outside hitter, Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week, Ivy Earl (Howell). The final kill was assisted by the Greyhound Invitational Most Valuable Player, sophomore setter Kathleen Egan (Cleveland/Beaumont) to freshman utility player Morgan Mellinger (Akron/St. Vincent St. Mary), for a 25-16 final.

Senior setter Ashley Nuding (Perrysburg/Springfield) began the second set with a five point service run of her own. The Yellow Jackets defense was at its best in set two, allowing the Lions to nine points. The final of 25-9 was sealed after a kill from sophomore utility player Alexis Garrett (Mentor).

The Lions gained an early two point lead in set three but the Yellow Jackets quickly battled back to tie the set at two. BW caught their rhythm after a 13-6 run and did not look back, claiming the third and final set with a kill from Brown, assisted by Egan.

BW will be in action again this week hosting the Spartans of Case Western Reserve on Wednesday for the annual Marcia French match. Game time is set to be served up at 7 p.m.
